ஒருபொழுதும் வாழ்வது அறியார் கருதுப
கோடியும் அல்ல பல.
(குறள் 337: நிலையாமை அதிகாரம்)
Transliteration:
orupozhudhum vAzhvadhu aRiyAr karudhuba
kODiyum alla pala
orupozhudhum – not even once
vAzhvadhu – about the life we live (the impermanence)
aRiyAr – they would not know
karudhuba – but will have thoughts
kODiyum alla pala – not even a crore but more
Some people never think about the impermanence of life. But they would be thinking of millions of other thoughts that may not even be of any purpose. We can interpret this verse differently too. When even the life presently granted is not known to be permanent, thinking as if they would million other lives is out of sheer ignorance. vaLLuvar redicules the persons that indulge in million other thoughts without thinking the impermanence of life.
Thoughts abound without thinking in the minds
of senseless,of the impermanence this life finds.

ஒருபொழுதும் – எப்போதும்
வாழ்வது – வாழ்க்கையின் நிலையினை (அதாவது நிலையின்மையை)
அறியார் – அறியமாட்டார்
கருதுப – ஆனால் எண்ணுவார்கள்
கோடியும் அல்ல பல – கோடி அல்ல, மட்டும் அதற்கும் மேலான எண்ணங்கள்
வாழ்க்கையின் நிலையின்மையை ஒருபோது சிந்திக்கவும், அறியவும் மாட்டார் சிலர். ஆனால் அவர்கள் தேவையற்ற எண்ணங்களை எண்ணுவதோ ஒருகோடிக்கும் மேலாம். இதையே வேறுவிதமாகவும் பொருள் கொள்ளலாம். இருக்கும் வாழ்க்கையே நிலையானதா இல்லையா என்று அறியாதவர்கள், ஏதோ தமக்கு கோடிக்கும் மேலான வாழ்விருப்பதாக நினைப்பது அறிவின்மையினால்தானே. நிலையின்மையை நினையாது மற்ற எண்ணங்களில் மூழ்கியிருப்பவர்களை குறித்து வள்ளுவர் ஏளனமாக பேசுகிற குறள் இது.
இன்றெனது குறள்:
வாழ்வின் நிலையாமை தாமறியார் கோடியாய்
சூழ்ந்திருக்கும் பாழெண்ணத் தோர்
