அறவாழி அந்தணன் தாள்சேர்ந்தார்க் கல்லால்
பிறவாழி நீந்தல் அரிது.
(குறள் 8: கடவுள் வாழ்த்து அதிகாரம்)
Transliteration:
aRavAzhi andhaNan thAL sErndhArk kallAl
piRavAzi nIndhal aridhu.
aRavAzhi – the ocean of virtue (aRa Azhi) or one who lives virtuus ( aRa vAzhi)
andhaNan – Virtuous, learned and supreme being
thAL – the feet
sErndhArk kallAl – Unless one surrenders to (to that Supreme being)
piRavAzi – the ocean of line (implied tedious, wearisome)
nIndhal aridhu. – impossible to swim (and come to a shore)
Most often, people compare life to a burdensome sea. Its baffling exapanse, fearsome depth, roaring waves, dangerous creatures, etc., make it difficult to cross by swimming. I am not sure if this verse was written before there were boats, or ships. In any case, I think vaLLuvar has taken the poetic liberty to accentuate the burden of live by likening it to swimming such a troublesome and turbulent sea waters.
Just like someone needs the help of a good ship and a good captain to cross the ocean, to cross the ocean of life one needs to surrender to the great soul which is the embodiment of virtues!
It is common practice in religious texts to write about life as somekind of ordeal and every individual that is born on this earth should strive to get the past this life and aspire for eternal bliss without the burden of life-death cycle.
Live the life of virtues and you life will be blissful is one way of saying. Another way is to say, if you don’t live the life like this, your life will be difficult or doomed is another way of saying the same. Prior one is teaching and the later one is fear mongering. It is indeed surpring to see vaLLuva use such a tone.
May be for people that don’t neither know on their own nor, even if somebody were to tell them, it could be the only way!
But for those who surrender ‘Him’, the sea of virtues, at ‘His’ feet
Impossible to reach the shores of sea of life, so tumultuous to beat!

சேர்ந்தார்க் கல்லால் – அணுக்கத்தில் இருப்பவர்களைத் தவிர பிறிதோருக்கு
பிறவாழி – பிறந்து வாழும் வாழ்க்கை என்னும் ஆழமான, கடத்தற்கு பெருந்தூரமாக, சோர்வையும், தரக்கூடிய , கடலிலே உண்டாகக்கூடிய மற்றும் பலவித ஆபத்துகளையும் குறிப்பது
நீந்தல் அரிது. – நீந்திக் கடப்பது மிகவும் கடினம்.
சாதாரணப் பேச்சிலே வாழ்க்கையென்பதை ஒரு கடலுக்கு ஒப்பாகச் சொல்வது வழக்கு. கடலானது சோர்வைத்தரும் நீண்ட தூரம், ஆழம், ஆர்ப்பரிக்கும் அலைகள், ஆபத்தை விளைக்ககூடிய பல உயிரினங்கள் என்று நீந்திக் கடப்பதற்கு ஒரு சவாலான களமாக இருப்பது. அதைக் கடப்பதற்கு எப்படி ஒரு நல்ல நாவாய் தேவையோ, நாவாயைச் செலுத்த மீகாமன் தேவையோ, அதைப் போன்றவன் தான் அறக்கடலாய் விளங்கும் சான்றோனான இறைப்பொருள். அவனைத் துணையெனக் கொண்டே, பிறவியாகிய, பேராபத்துகளும், கடப்பதற்கு பல சவால்களும் நிறைந்த மனித வாழ்கையக் கடக்கமுடியும்.
வாழ்க்கையை ஒரு சுமையாக, சவாலாக, கடப்பதற்கு ஒரு கடினமான ஒன்றாக சித்தரித்து, தனி மனிதக் குறிக்கோளே அந்த பிறப்பு இறப்பு இல்லாத பேரின்ப நிலையை அடையத்தான் என்கிற கருத்திலே பலரும் எழுதியிருப்பது ஆச்சரியமேயில்லை. வள்ளுவரும்கூட அப்படியே எழுதியிருப்பதுதான் சற்று வியப்பை உண்டாக்குகிறது.
வாழ்க்கையை அழகாக வாழக்கற்றுக்கொண்டுவிட்டால், இது கடலாக இல்லாமல் கல்கண்டாக மாறிவிடாதா என்ன? அறத்தோடு வாழுங்கள், உங்கள் வாழ்வு செழிக்கும் என்பது ஒருவகை. நீங்கள் இப்படி இல்லாவிட்டால், இது போல ஆகிவிடும் என்பது மற்றொரு வகை. முதலாவது சொல்லிக்கொடுப்பது, பிந்தையது, பயமுறுத்துவது.
ஆனால் என்ன செய்ய, சமயத்துக்கு, தனக்காகவும் தெரியாது, சொன்னாலும் புரியாதவர்களுக்கு, இப்படிச்சொன்னால்தான் புரியுமோ?
