நீர்இன்று அமையாது உலகெனின் யார்யார்க்கும்
வான்இன்று அமையாது ஒழுக்கு.
(குறள் 20: வான்சிறப்பு அதிகாரம்)
Transliteration:
nIrindRu amaiyAdhu ulagenin yAryArkkum
vAnindRu amaiyAdhu ozukku.
nIrindRu – without water
amaiyAdhu – wont sustain
ulagenin – this world
yAryArkkum – for anyone, regardless of their status
vAnindRu – Without the clouds on the sky
amaiyAdhu – won’t get (ways to replenish source of water)
ozukku – the water that falls from clouds on this earth (is also interpreted as virtuous conduct)
This last verse of the chapter on “glory of rain” can be interpreted in two differen ways. Both make sense. Parimelazhagar, the foremost commentator of “ThirukkuraL” interprets it in a very simplistic way. This world will not sustain without water source similar to the fact that there is no water showering from skies without clouds.
It could be as simple as that, but definitely is not as interesting a fact to write about. Some commentators have interpreted the word “ozhukku” as virtuous conduct of people of the world.
Thus the second interpretation is: ‘If the rains fail, the virtuous path of life is not adhered to by the people of the world and there will be no water for anybody regardless what their individual status is!’ Is this to be construed just as another observation? Or some indirect warning to the people to tell them that without rains the virtues will not be there in this world and also none can live without water too? Is it another instance of insisting that people tread the life of high virtues? It could very well be that. Once again, most commentaries on this verse lack deep insights and are very superficial.
“World will not sustain without water for anyone!
But for the clouds, source of water, rain fall none.”

நீர்இன்று – நீர் இல்லாமல்
அமையாது – நிலைபெறாது, இயங்காது, உயிர்ப்புடன் இராது
உலகெனின் – இவ்வுலகம் என்றால்
யார்யார்க்கும் – எந்த நிலை அல்லது குணநலன்கள் உடைய யாராயிருந்தாலும்
வான்இன்று – வானத்திலே இருக்கின்ற மழை மேகங்கள் இல்லாமல்
அமையாது – கிடைக்காது, இருக்காது (மழையினால் கிடைக்கூடிய நீராதாரங்கள்)
ஒழுக்கு – மேகங்கள் பொழியும் மழை (ஒழுக்கு என்பது, ஒழுக்க குணமென்றும் சொல்லப்படலாம்)
மழையின் பெருமையின் பற்றி பேசும் இவ்வதிகாரத்தின் இறுதி குறள். இதை இருவிதமாகாப் பொருள் கொள்ளலாம். இரண்டுமே பொருந்தி வருகின்றன. திருக்குறளின் முதன்மை உரையாசிரியரான பரிமேலழகர் நேராகப் பொருள் கொண்டு, “ஓழுக்கு” என்ற சொல்லை “மழை பொழிதல்” என்றே கூறியுள்ளார்.
நீர் இல்லாமல் இவ்வுலகில் வாழ்வில்லை. அந்நீரோ, வானின்றி, அதிலே நீரை சுமந்து வரும் மேகங்கள் இல்லாமலில்லை, என்றுதான் பொருள் கூறியுள்ளார். இது ஒரு அறியப்பட்ட உண்மையை சொல்கிற அளவிலேதான் நிற்கிறது.
மணக்குடவர், காளிங்கர் போன்றோர், “ஓழுக்கு” என்ற சொல்லை, ஒழுக்கம், நீர்மை என்ற பொருளிலே புரிந்துகொண்டு, ‘நீர் இல்லாமல் உலகில் வாழ்வில்லை. அந்த நீரும் வானத்திலே இருந்து பொழியவில்லையானால், உலகில் ஒழுக்கம் குறையும்.’ என்ற அளவில் பொருள் கூறியுள்ளனர். மீண்டும், மழைக்கான உலகியல் காரணிகளை, நாம் தவறாக பயன்படுத்தினோமானால், மழையானது குறைந்து போகும். அறநெறி மிகுந்த சமுதாயத்தில் இயற்கை வளங்களைச் சுரண்டுதல் இராது, அதனால் இயற்கை வளங்கள் கெடாது. பருவங்கள் உரிய காலத்தில் உரிய கொடைகளைக் கொடுத்துக்கொண்டேயிருக்கும் என்பது தான் உள்ளே வைக்கப்பட்ட கருத்தாக இருக்கலாம்.
இக்குறளுக்கு, பெரும்பாலான உரையாசிரியர்களின் விளக்கங்கள் நுணுக்கமாக இல்லாமல் நுனிப்புல் மேய்ந்தார்போல இருக்கிறது.

உலகிலார்க்கும் நீரின்றி வாழ்விலையாம் நீர்மை
இலவேயாம் வானிலையா னால்
(நீர்மை = ஒழுக்கம், குணம்)
