amizhdhinum AtRa inidhE tham makkaL
siRukai aLAvia kUzh
amizhdhinum AtRa – more than nectar
inidhE – sweet
tham makkaL – their own little children’s
siRukai – baby hands
aLAvia – played with
kUzh – food
This verse gives clues to the delicate sense of aesthetics of vaLLuvar. Usually whatever their liitle children (babies) do, parents are at awe and enjoy every bit of it. From the time a child turns, crawls, takes his/her first baby steps, every step of growing up is thoroughly enjoyable to everyone, especially to parents. It is a true blessing to have children in one’s life.
This gives another clue to the question, if vaLLuvar had any children. If he had a wife in vAsuki (could be completely a fictional character), he sure must have had children. Next two verses (“makkaL mei thInDum”, “kuzhal inidhu yAzh inidhu” ) give ample clues to the fact he indeed had children and the expressions are definitely from his own personal experience. Who knows whatever happened to his progeny and his successive generations? Did they live gloriously too and made their parents proud? Were they successful poets like vaLLuvar?
When their little children mess up and play with food with their little, tender fingers, the messed up food tastes even better than nectar and is not discarded as waste. We all know, if the same is done slightly grown up children, then it is matter of irritation. So he has used the word “siRu kai”, meaning tender baby hands. This verse and the following two verses are especially wriiten about little babies in this chapter.
What is obvious is that vaLLuvar had the heart of a little child with excitement and awe at these little things and had the ability to express them so beautifully.
“Food messed up and played with baby’s hands taste
Better than even the Nectar and to parents, is no waste”
