தந்தை மகற்காற்று நன்றி அவையத்து
முந்தி இருப்பச் செயல்.
(குறள் 67: மக்கட்பேறு அதிகாரம்)
Transliteration:
Thandhai magaRkatRu nandRi avaiyaththu
Mundhi iruppach cheyal
Thandhai – father
magaRkatRu – the duty towards son
nandRi – by doing good
avaiyaththu – in the gathering of wisemen
Mundhi – secure (by educating him appropriately) an important position
iruppach cheyal – to place
“Sangam anthology’s most important work, “pura nAnUru” sketches the social, political environment and living in detail through the poets of that age. One such song by a poet “ponmudiyAr” says thus: “IndRu puRantharudhal enthalaik kaDanE, sAnROn Akkudhal thandhaikkuk kaDanE” (ஈன்று புறந்தருதல் எந்தலைக் கடனே, சான்றோனாக்குதல் தந்தைக்குக் கடனே). It is said through a mother and she says, “It is my duty to bring the son to this word and it is father’s duty to make him a learned”. This echoes the thought of vaLLuvar or it could be otherway around too. Regardless, by today’s societal setup, equality is accorded to both man and his wife (or wife and her man for equality emphasizing people), the duty of upbringing is vested with both parents and the children should be both genders. Equality does not apply only to the “ duty of giving birth”, still.
But who knows, with all the advancements in science and technology, the future may fabricate or alternate gene pool to come up with an artificial womb for men and make it a possibility for a man to have a child and make it a societal norm too!
Regardless, the duty of parents is to make their children, to be par excellence among the congregation of erudite and be respected by them as one among them. The order of mother, father, teacher and the God is because of this. Mother’s duty is to bring the child to earth; A father’s duty is bring him up with good living habits and to reach him to a good teacher to make him wise; A teacher’s duty is to mould the student and teach him higher principles of live including the knowledge of godhead, apart from the skills to survive successfully. Though mother bears the pain of birthing, and the teacher teaches the life’s skills, it is the father whose duty it is to give their offspring the right path to a right teacher. Hence he is addressed in vaLLuvar’s verse.
My verse for today makes it a duty of parents of their children, which is the right thing to do.
“Father’s duty is to place his son
As the foremost among wisemen”

தந்தை – ஒருவரின் தந்தை
மகற்காற்று – தம் மகனுக்குச் செய்யக்கூடிய
நன்றி – நன்மை பயக்கும் செயல்
அவையத்து – கற்றோர்கள் நிறைந்த அவையிலே
முந்தி – முதன்மையானவனாக
இருப்பச் செயல். – இருக்கச் செய்வதாகும்
“ஈன்று புறந்தருதல் எந்தலைக் கடனே, சான்றோனாக்குதல் தந்தைக்குக் கடனே” என்ற புறநானூற்றுப்பாடல் பொன்முடியாரால் எழுதப்பட்டது. ஆண்பிள்ளைகள் சார்பாகவே எழுதப்பட்டாலும், இது குறளின் கருத்தையொட்டித்தான் இருக்கிறது. ஆனாலும் இன்றைய சமூக வாழ்வியல் மட்டுமல்ல, சரியான சமத்துவ வாழ்வியல் முறைப்படி, கடமை என்பது பெற்றோர்களுக்கும், மக்கள் என்பது இருபாலரையும் குறிப்பதாகத்தான் கொள்ளவேண்டும். சமத்துவம் இல்லாத ஒரு நிலை “ஈன்று புறந்தருதலில்” மட்டும்தான்!
அறிவியல் முன்னேறிக்கொண்டு இருக்கும் வேகத்தில், யார் கண்டது, செயற்கை கருப்பையினை ஆண்களுக்கு வைத்து, “ஈன்று புறந்தருதல் தந்தைக்குக் கடன்” ஆகக்கூட ஆகலாம் வருங்காலத்தில். “நீயொரு குழந்தை நானொரு குழந்தையென்று” பெற்றோர் இருவரும் சமத்துவமாக வாழும் காலமும் வரலாம்.
ஆனால் நல்ல பெற்றோருக்குக் கடமையாக இருப்பது, தம் மக்களை கற்றவர்கள் நிறைந்த சபையிலே இவர் கல்வி கேள்விகளில் முதல்வர் என்று சான்றோர்கள் எல்லாம் வியந்து பாராட்டும் படியாக செய்தலாகும். மாதா, பிதா, குரு, தெய்வம் என்ற முறையும் (அன்னை, தந்தை, ஆசான், இறை) இதனாலே வந்தது. இவர்தாம் தந்தையென்று மக்களுக்குச் சொல்பவள் தாய்; மக்களை, நல்ல ஆசானிடத்தில் சேர்ப்பித்து அவர்களுக்கு கல்வி கற்பிக்கக் காரணியும், வாழும் முறைகளைச் சொல்லித்தருபவனும் தந்தை; தம் மாணக்கருக்கு கல்வியும், அறிவும் தந்து, உயர் பொருளாம் இறையை அடைய ஆற்றுப்படுத்துபவர் ஆசான். தாய் பெற்றாலும், ஆசான் வழிகாட்டியாக இருந்தாலும், தந்தையின் பங்கே மக்களை நெறிப்படுத்தி, வாழ்க்கைப் பாதையில் சரிவர செலுத்துவதால், தந்தையின் கடமையை முன்னிருத்தி இக்குறள் பேசுகிறது. ஆனால் இன்றைய வாழ்வியல் உண்மையை ஒட்டியே எனது குறள்!
