என்பி லதனை வெயில்போலக் காயுமே
அன்பி லதனை அறம்.
(குறள் 77: அன்புடைமை அதிகாரம்)
Transliteration:
Enbiladhanai veyilpOlak kAyumE
Anbiladhanai aRam
Enbiladhanai – Like how, boneless worms
veyilpOlak –are baked under the scorching sun
kAyumE – will completely burn (metaphorically)
Anbiladhanai – the loveless, compassionless people
aRam – the power of virtue
In SilappadikAram, one of the three tenets is: ‘those who slip in their political duty, their lack of virtue will become the reason for their death’. The Pandya king slipped in his duty of being just, and loving to all his subjects equally. His love for his wife weighed more before the welfare of and love for his citizens, which stood the reason for his misjudgement and killing of Kovalan. The chain reaction was that his and his queen’s death and distruction of his city came because of that.
The boneless worms are rendered formless and dead by the heat of scorching sun. Similar fate will be for the pople that lack love for fellow beings. Their lack of love will justify their acts that are unkind and unjust towards others which in turn will have repurcussion to harm them.
Scorching sun burns the worm, boneless
So does the virtue, to the beings, loveless

என்பிலதனை – எலும்பில்லா புழுக்களை
வெயில்போலக் – வெயில் தீய்ப்பது போல
காயுமே – தீய்க்கும், கருக்கிவிடும்
அன்பிலதனை – அன்பில்லா உயிர்களை
அறம் – அறமானது
“அரசியல் பிழைத்தோர்க் கறம் கூற்றாவதும்” என்பது சிலப்பதிகார மூன்று முக்கிய கருத்துக்களில் ஒன்று. அரசியலில் அறம் தவறியதாலேயே பாண்டிய மன்னனுக்கு, அதுவே அவனையும் கொன்று, அதன் காரணமாக அவன் மனைவியும் உயிர் துறந்து, மதுரையும் எரியுண்ண காரணமாகிப் போனது. மனைவியின் சிலம்பு களவாடப்பட்டது என்ற ஒரு காரணத்துக்காக, தான் அரசனாய், எல்லா குடிகளிடமும், தன் மனைவியுட்பட ஒரே அளவில் அன்பு கொண்டிராமல், அதன்காரணமாக, ஆராயாமல், ஒருதலை சார்பாக, கோவலன் கொலையுண்ணக் காரணமாக இருந்ததாலேயே, பாண்டியனும், மதுரையும் அழிந்தன.
எலும்பில்லாத புழுக்கூட்டமானது, வெயில் காயும்போது, வெளியில் வந்து, வெயிலின் சூட்டிலே கருகி மடியும். அதே போன்றே, அன்பில்லாத உயிர்கள் அறவழி நில்லாதொழிவர் எனவே, அவர்களும் அதன்கண்ணே துன்புறுவர் என்று கூறப்பட்டுள்ளது.
