செல்விருந்து ஓம்பி வருவிருந்து பார்த்திருப்பான்
நல்விருந்து வானத் தவர்க்கு.
(குறள் 86: விருந்தோம்பல் அதிகாரம்)
Transliteration:
Selvirundhu – the guests that came and left
Ombi – feeding them to the best of ability
varuvirundhu – new guests to arrive
pArththiruppAn – who looks to have them (the new guests)
Nalvirundhu – becomes a special guest to
vAnaththavarkku – the gods of heavenly abode.
Those who have fed the guests and see them off and wait for the next ones are awaited even by the heavens as their special guests when they leave their mortal coil is what is said in this verse.
There is a general belief that those who excel in benevolence and penance will be given the heavenly seat. In Sangam anthology, works like elAdhi, aRaneri and nAladiyAr, there are ample references reflecting the same. In Parimelazhagar’s commentary he says, people live as expressed in this verse will be born as one of the heavenly beings in their next birth, confirming vaLLuvar’s belief in cycle of birth and death once again. As has been said in an earlier verse in the chapter of family life, those who live gloriously (by their deeds of virtues) will be placed among the heavens. MAnikkavachakar, the saivite saint poet that wrote ThiruvAsakam, in his work of SivapurANam, says, ‘kallAi, manidharAi, pEyAi, gaNangaLAi, vallasurarAgi, munivarAi, dEvarAi (“கல்லாய் மனிதராய்ப் பேயாய்க் கணங்களாய் வல்லசுரராகி முனிவராய்த் தேவராய்”) as successive refined births that are possible for a soul to traverse. He lists, being born as one among the Gods as a possibility.
Though the verse is a beautiful poetry, the practical nature of the same is questionable, more definitely in today’s context. We just have to see it as an exemplification of the virtue of hospitality.
Tending the guest arrived and awaits the new next
Is a person that becomes the heaven’s special guest!

செல்விருந்து – இல்லத்திற்கு வந்த சென்ற விருந்தினருக்கு
ஓம்பி – உரியவகையில் உணவளித்து அனுப்பிவைத்து
வருவிருந்து – மேலும் வரக்கூடிய விருந்தினரை
பார்த்திருப்பான் – எதிர் நோக்கியிருக்ககூடிய இல்லத்தார்
நல்விருந்து – நல்ல விருந்தினராக இருப்பர்
வானத்தவர்க்கு – வானுலகில் வாழும் தேவர்களுக்கு
தன் இல்லத்திற்கு வந்த விருந்தினருக்கு சிறப்பாக உணவளித்துப் பசியாற்றிவிட்டும், மேலும் புதிய விருந்தினர்கள் வருகிறார்களோ என்று வழிபார்த்திருக்கும் பண்பாளர்கள், வானுலகத்தின் தேவர்களுக்கு சிறப்பான விருந்தினராவர் என்பது இக்குறளின் பொருள்.
தானமும் தவமும் சிறந்தார்க்கு வானோர் வீட்டுப் பேற்றினை அளிப்பர் என்பது பொதுக்கருத்து நிறை சங்கபாடல்களில், அதுவும் நன்னெறி நூல்களான நாலடியார், ஏலாதி, அறநெறி போன்றவற்றில் காணப்படுகிறது. பரிமேலழகர் உரை, ‘மறுபிறப்பில் தேவனாய் வானில் உள்ளவர்க்கும் நல்விருந்து’ என்று கூறியிருக்கிறார். அதாவது மறுபிறப்பே மனிதப்பிறப்பாய் இருக்காது, இல்லறவியலில் ஏற்கனவே சொல்லியது போல, வையத்துள் வாழ்வாங்கு வாழ்ந்ததினால், வானுறையும் தெய்வத்துள் ஒருவராக வைக்கப்படுவார் என்ற பொருள் செய்துள்ளார். இக்கருத்து மாணிக்கவாசகர் சிவபுராணத்தில் கூறியதுபோல “கல்லாய் மனிதராய்ப் பேயாய்க் கணங்களாய் வல்லசுரராகி முனிவராய்த் தேவராய்” என்று அடுக்கியது போல தேவராய் பிறப்பது ஒரு பிறவியென்பதை ஒட்டி இருக்கிறது.
செல்விருந்து, வருவிருந்து என்பவை சொல்லடுக்காக அழகாக இருந்தாலும், எல்லோர்க்கும் பொருந்துவதாகமுடியாது, நடைமுறைக்கு ஏற்றதாகவும் கொள்ளமுடியாது. விருந்தோம்பலின் உயர்வை மேலும் உயர்த்திக்காட்டுவதற்காக சொல்லப்பட்டது என்று வேண்டுமானால் எடுத்துக்கொள்ளலாம்.
I have left the “selvirundhu, varuvirundhu” concept as I see that as a meter constraint related usage. The verse of today is generally reflective of the virtue of hospitality.
