ஒழுக்க முடையவர்க்கு ஒல்லாவே தீய
வழுக்கியும் வாயாற் சொலல்.
(குறள் 139: ஒழுக்கமுடைமை அதிகாரம்)
Transliteration:
Ozhukka muDaiyavarkku ollAvE tIyA
Vazgukkiyum vAyAR solal
Ozhukkam –code of virtuous conduct
uDaiyavarkku – living by this
ollAvE – is not possible
tIyA– caustic, words of bad intentions, ill speak
Vazgukkiyum – even forgetfully, carelessly
vAyAR – using their mouth (we need to ponder the usage of this word)
solal – uttering
People of righteous thought and conduct will not illspeak even forgetfully that cause pain to others. Though, Parimelazhagar has said, forgetfully, the usage of “vazhukkiyum” implies, even as a slip of the tongue. Lying, badmouthing others, speaking caustic words with an intention to cause harm, speaking useless words are of combined in one word “thIya” here by vaLLuvar.
The redundant usage of the word “vAyAR” in this verse could have been avoided as the “speaking” itself is only using the mouth.There are expressions where people say, eyes speak, even recite poems; For some people the hands speak on their instruments to produce exquisite music; For some other people, their hand would speak on someone to punish them. Even hearts speak with one another in some cases. These are all expressions of beauty to effectively say something.
That does not seem to be the requirement here. On the contrary the emphasis of the word “vAyAR” makes us think, if they would think or say it in their mind or even would have someone else say such words. The work “iniyavai naRpadhu” (sweet things 40?) says, there is no better accomplishment than not speaking harsh words even if the wealth has to wither.
“Never can they speak ill even as a slip of their mouth
People of righteous conduct, do not speak any filth”
ஒழுக்கம் – அறநெறியில் ஒழுகுவது
உடையவர்க்கு – பண்பாய் கொண்டவர்க்கு
ஒல்லாவே – இயலாது
தீய – தீய சொற்களை
வழுக்கியும் – மறந்தும் கூட
வாயாற் – தம்முடைய வாயினால் (இந்த சொல்லின் தேவையை சிந்திப்போம்)
சொலல் – சொல்லுதல் என்பது
ஒழுக்கத்தில் நிறைந்தவர்கள், மறந்தும்கூட, வாய்தவறுதலாகக் கூட தம் வாயிலிருந்து மற்றவருக்கு துன்பம் விளைவிக்கும் சொற்களைச் சொல்லமாட்டார்கள் என்பது இக்குறளின் கருத்து. தீச்சொல் என்பது, பொய், ஒருவரைப்பற்றிய கோள்சொல், கடுஞ்சொல், வீண்சொல் போன்றவை.
சொல்வது என்பதே வாயால்தான். வாயால் என்பது ஒரு தேவையற்ற மிகைச்சொல்லாகவே இக்குறளில் இருக்கிறது. கண்கள் பேசும், கவிபாடும், சிலருக்கு வாத்தியங்களில் கை பேசும், சிலருக்கு அடித்து துவைப்பதில் கைபேசும், சிலரின் மனது பேசும் என்றெல்லாம் படிக்கிறோம். அங்கெல்லாம் பேசும் புறக்கருவியோ, அகக்கருவியோ எதுவென குறித்தல் மொழியின் அழகு கருதியோ அல்லது கருத்தின் பொருத்தம் கருதியோதான்.
இங்கு வாயால் என்று குறிப்பாகக் சொல்வதால், சிந்தனையில் நினைந்து, மனதால் சொல்லலாமோ, சொல்வார்களோ என்கிற ஐயம் ஏற்படுகிறது. பிறர் வாயால் சொல்விப்பார்களோ என்றும் நினைக்கத்தோன்றுகிறது.
இனியவை நாற்பது, “ஆக்கம் அழியினும் அல்லவை கூறா தேர்ச்சியின் தேர்வினிய தில்” என்று வளமே அழியினும் வன்சொல் சொல்லாதிருக்கும் தேர்ச்சியினைவிட உயர்ந்த தேர்வும் இனியதும் இல்லை என்கிறது.
