அறன்வரையான் அல்ல செயினும் பிறன்வரையாள்
பெண்மை நயவாமை நன்று.
(குறள் 150: பிறனில் விழையாமை அதிகாரம்)
Transliteration:
aRanvaraiyAn alla seyinum piRanvaraiyAL
peNmai nayavAmai nandRu
aRan – virtuous ways
varaiyAn – not having bound by them
alla – ways that are not virtuos
seyinum – even if he does (that which are not virtuous)
piRanvaraiyAL – Other man’s rightful possession, living bounded by matrimony,
peNmai – his wife (other man’s wife)
nayavAmai – not desiring with illicit intentions (the other man’s wife)
nandRu – is good
Even when someone does not personally adopt or be bound by the virtuous ways in his life, and indulges in acts that are not so, at least he should not indulge in the big sin of illicity relationship with other man’s wife.
The solution in this verse seems a hopeless compromise. This will only encourage accepting other sins comparable to desiring other man’s wife, which is fundamentally wrong. Tolerating anything not virtuous should never be allowed. This defines a minimal policy of goodness which is not acceptable. Concessions can work in business but not for virtuous ways. No form of veering of virtuous ways is acceptable. Also a similar sentiment is expressed talking about other good attributes of life in different chapters. When a good virtue is emphasized, it should be emphasized for its absolute worth, not as “at least this, if not others”.
“Even if not living within the bounds of virtuousity, but otherwise
Not coveting other man’s wife and desiring her illicitly is, wise”
தமிழிலே:
அறன் – நெறிவழி
வரையான் – தனக்குரியதாய் கொள்ளாது
அல்ல – நெறியல்லாதன
செயினும் – செய்தாலும்
பிறன்வரையாள் – மாற்றான் உரிமைக்குட்பட்டு அவனெல்லைக்குள் இருக்கின்ற
பெண்மை – மாற்றான் மனைவியை
நயவாமை – இச்சிக்காமல் இருத்தல்
நன்று – நன்றாம்.
ஒருவன் நெறிவழிகளினை தனக்கு உரியனவாகக் கொள்ளாமல், நெறியற்ற செயல்களையே செய்தாலும் கூட, மாற்றானின் உரிமையும், அவனெனல்லைக்குள் இருப்பவளுமான, பிறன்மனையை இச்சிக்கும் பெரும் பாவத்தையாது செய்யாமலிருக்கவேண்டும்.
இக்குறள் சொல்லும் கருத்து ஒரு இணக்கத் தீர்வாக இருக்கிறது. வேறு எந்த அறவழிகளில் பிழைத்தாலும்கூட இந்த பிறன்மனை இச்சிக்கும் பாவத்தையாவது செய்யாமலிருப்பது நன்று என்பது மற்ற அறவழிகளில் பிழைப்பதைப் பொறுத்துக்கொள்ளும் ஒரு மனப்பான்மையை வளர்த்துவிடும். இதைப்போன்ற ஒரு குறைந்தளவு அறக்கொள்கை என்பது ஒவ்வாத கருத்து. சலுகை என்பது வியாபாரத்துக்குப் பயன்படலாம், அறவழி நடத்தலுக்கு பயனாகாது. எவ்வித அறப்பிறழலும் நன்றன்று! அறனொழுக்கம் அவ்வறவொழுக்கின் இன்றியமையாமைக்காகவே வலியுறுத்தப்படவேண்டும்.
