அழுக்காறு உடையார்க்கு அதுசாலும் ஒன்னார்
வழுக்காயும் கேடீன் பது.
( குறள் 165:அழுக்காறாமை அதிகாரம்)
Transliteration:
azhukkARu uDaiyArkk(u) adhusAlum onnAr
vazhukkAyum kEDIn badhu
azhukkARu – The envious mentality
uDaiyArkk(u) – those who have such mentality
adhusAlum – that alone will suffice (to destroy them)
onnAr – their enemies
vazhukkAyum – even if there is none
kED(u) – harm to self
Inbadhu – it (the envious mentality) will bring
Ones own ill deeds will hit him back. ThirumUlar, one of the 18 siddhaas, in his work “Thirumandhiram” says:”Avviyam pEsi aRankeDa nillanmin” (Don’t speak words of jealous and be non virtuous). He likens the envious words spoken as slipping from virtue. Avviyam is another word for envy in Tamizh. Auvayyar, the saint poetess in her simple aphorism advices not to speak out of jealousy.
The envy a person has for others for their prosperity will destroy him as his enemy, and he does not need other enemies. Envy instigates people to tread a non virtuous path which will only come a full circle to be an agent of self-destruction. In this verse, vaLLuvar underlines the “Envy” is the first and foremost enemy of anyone.
“None needed as an enemy for jealous
As their jealousy it self is their nemesis”
தமிழிலே:
அழுக்காறு – பொறாமை என்னும் பொல்லாக்குணம்
உடையார்க்கு – கொண்டவர்களுக்கு
அதுசாலும் – அது ஒன்றே போதும் (அவர்களை அழிக்க)
ஒன்னார் – பகைவர்கள்
வழுக்காயும் – இல்லாது ஒழிந்தும்
கேடு – கெடுதியினை
ஈன்பது – கொடுத்துவிடும் அது.
“அவ்வியம் பேசேல்” என்பது ஒளவையின் வாக்கு. “அவ்வியம் பேசி அறங்கெட நில்லன்மின்” என்பார் திருமூலர் திருமந்திரத்தில். கம்பர் “அவ்வியம் நீத்து உயர்ந்தமனது அருந்தவனைக் கொணர்ந்து” என்று கலைக்கோட்டு முனிவரைப் (ரிஷியச்ருங்கர்) பற்றி திரு அவதாரப் படலத்திலே கூறுவான். அவ்வியம் என்ற சொல் குறிப்பது பொறாமையைத்தான்.
“தன்வினைத் தன்னைச் சுடும்” என்ற சொல்வழக்குகேற்ப, பிறர்மேல் ஒருவர் கொள்ளும் பொறாமையானது, அல்லது அவரது பொறாமை என்னும் பொல்லாக் குணம், அவருக்கு வேறு பகையே தேவையில்லை என்பதுபோல அவருக்கு அதுவே பகையாயிருந்து மிக்கக் கெடுதலைச் செய்துவிடும்.

பகைவேறு வேண்டாவே அவ்வியத் தார்க்கு
மிகையாம் அதுவே பகை
