பயனில பல்லார்முன் சொல்லல் நயனில
நட்டார்கண் செய்தலிற் றீது.
(குறள் 192: பயனில சொல்லாமை அதிகாரம்)
Transliteration:
Payanila pallArmun sollal nayanila
naTTArkaN seidhaliR thIdhu
Payanila – about useless things as vain-speak
pallArmun – before many a learned people
sollal – Speaking as such
nayanila – deeds that are abhorrent, not yielding anything good
naTTArkaN – to dear friends
seidhaliR – worse than doing such things
thIdhu – the worst wrong
Wasteful words spoken before others especially learned are worse than the worst wrong done to friends.
Here is another verse that has a similar theme like “this is worse than that”, and once again all commentators have interpreted without asking, what could be the connection between vain-speak and the harm done to friends! There is not even a hint of connotation anywhere about the connection!
When vaLLuvar wrote these verses, he must have witnessed related incidents or had some idea about what prompted him to write a verse specifically. Unfortunately, he has not left a clue for us to really comprehend his train of thought in many verses.
Perhaps, he meant to say that because of friendship, friends could ignore and even condone harm done to them. But others would not do so, and that would cause greater harm. This is like self inflicting pain through vain-speak.
“Useless words of vain speak in public are worse
Than harm done to friends as an act of perverse”

பயனில – வீணாகப் ஒருவருக்கு உதவாதவற்றைப் பற்றி
பல்லார்முன் – பலர்முன்னிலையில் (அறிவுடையார் பலர்முன் என்பர் உரையாசிரியர்கள்)
சொல்லல் – பேசுகின்ற பேச்சு
நயனில – வெறுக்கத்தக்க, நன்மையில்லாச் செயல்களை
நட்டார்கண் – தம் நண்பர்களுக்குச்
செய்தலின் – செய்வதை விட
தீது – தீமையைத் தருவனவாம்
கற்றறிந்த அறிவுடையோர் முன்பாக ஒருவன் சொல்லுதல், வெறுக்கத்தக்க, நன்மையினைத்தராத செயல்களை நண்பர்களுக்குச் செய்வதைவிட் தீமையைத் தரக்கூடியதாம்.
மீண்டும், “அதைவிட இது தீது” என்கிற பொருளில் ஒருகுறள். உரையாசிரியர்கள் பலரும் இது எதனால் என்ற கேள்வி கேட்காமல் சொன்னதை சொன்னவாறே உரை செய்திருக்கிற குறள் இது. ஒருவர் பயனில்லாமல் பேசுவதற்கும் நண்பர்களுக்கு செய்யும் தீமைக்கும் என்ன தொடர்பு?
வள்ளுவர் இக்குறள்களை எழுதிய காலத்தில், ஏதேனும் தொடர்புடைய நிகழ்வுகளோ, அல்லது இது தொடர்பான மனச்சித்திரங்களோ அவர் மனதில் எழுந்திருக்க வேண்டும். அவற்றை நாம் அறிய அவர் சொல்லிச் செல்லாதது நாம் இத்தகைய குறள்களின் முழுப்பயனை அறியவொண்ணாமல் செய்துவிட்டன.
இப்படி வேண்டுமானாலும் இருக்கலாம். நண்பர்களுக்கும், நன்கு அறிந்தவர்களுக்கும் செய்யப்படும் நன்மையில்லாச் செயல்களை அவர்கள் வேண்டுமானாலும் நட்பின் காரணமாக, அல்லது “அறிந்தவர் தவறிச் செய்தது” என்று மன்னித்து, மறந்துவிடலாம். மற்றவர்கள் அவ்வாறு இருப்பர் என்று சொல்லமுடியாது. வீண்பேச்சினால் வம்பை விலைக்கு வாங்குது ஒருவருக்கு தீங்காக முடிந்துவிடும்.
இன்றெனது குறள்:
நன்றிலாது நண்பருக்கு செய்தலினும் தீமையாம்
ஒன்றுமில்வீண் பேச்சுபலர் முன்
