நயன்சாரா நன்மையின் நீக்கும் பயன்சாராப்
பண்பில்சொல் பல்லா ரகத்து.
(குறள் 194: பயனில சொல்லாமை அதிகாரம்)
Transliteration:
nayansArA nanmayin nIkkum payansArAp
paNbilsol pallA ragaththu.
nayansArA – It is improper
nanmayin – and from getting good
nIkkum – it will remove the person (who?)
payansArAp – without yielding any use
paNbilsol – the one who speaks, without any virtue
pallAr agaththu – before many
Engaging in vain-speech before many, is nor proper for someone and is not virtuous. It also prevents them from getting any benefits they would otherwise get. The phrase “nayan sArA” has been interpreted as “devoid of justice” by most. But it makes sense to interpret it as “improper”. Such vain-speech removes a person from virtuous ways. How would good benefits goto a person virtueless?
Why is vain-speech improper? Whatever wastes others time and consideration is a violation of trust they place on a person to listen to. Such violation will yield only others displeasure and discontentment to a person. That alone suffices to stop any good to happen from others.

நயன்சாரா(து) – முறையானது இல்லை
நன்மையின் – கிடைக்க வேண்டிய நன்மைகளிலிருந்து
நீக்கும் – நீக்கிவிடும்
பயன்சாராப் – எவ்வித பயனையும் அளிக்காத
பண்பில்சொல் – பண்பில்லாத சொற்களைச் சொல்கிறவன்
பல்லாரகத்து – பலரின் முன்
பலரின் முன் பயனில்லாத வீணாகப் பேசுவது ஒருவருக்கு முறையும், அறவழியும் இல்லை. அது அவரை அவருக்குக் கிடைக்க வேண்டிய நன்மைகளிலிருந்து நீக்கிவிடும். நயன் சாராது என்பதற்கு நீதி நீங்கிய என்று பொருள் சொல்லப்படுகிறது. பலர் முன்பு பேசும் வீணான எப்பயனையும் தராத பேச்சு, ஒருவரை அவருக்குண்டான அறவழிகளிலிருந்து நீக்கும் முறையற்ற செயலாம்.
வீண்பேச்சு ஏன் முறையற்றது? பலருடைய நேரத்தை வீணாக்கும் எச்செயலுமே முறையற்றது. பலருக்கு எவ்வொரு பயனையும் தராமல், அவர்களுடைய நேரத்தை வீணாக்குகிற பேச்சு, மற்றவர்களின் வெறுத்தலையே கொடுக்கும் என்பதால அது முறையற்றது, அறவழியல்லாதது, பேசுகிறவருக்கு மற்றவர்களால் ஏதேனும் நன்மைகள் விளைவதாயிருந்தால் அவற்றையும் தடுத்துவிடும்.
