அதிகாரம் 21: தீவினையச்சம் (Fearing Sinful deeds)
[This chapter is about fearing to indulge in sinful deeds and warns those that engage in such acts to refrain from such acts/deeds giving them the repurcussions. As in previous chapters, vaLLuvar talks about why it should not be done, what comes if it is done, who will do it and who will not do it etc.]
தீவினையார் அஞ்சார் விழுமியார் அஞ்சுவர்
தீவினை என்னும் செருக்கு.
(குறள் 201: தீவினையச்சம் அதிகாரம்)
Transliteration:
thIvinaiyAr anjAr vizhumiyAr anjuvar
thIvinai ennum serukku
thIvinaiyAr – Those that are used to sinful deeds routinely
anjAr – will not fear indulging in them more
vizhumiyAr – People of virtuous traits
anjuvar – will fear
thIvinai ennum – such sinful acts
serukku – that are blurred intellect.
Sinful deeds that emerge out of blurred intellect, are the most feared by the people of virtuous nature. Those who have been soaked in such deeds and have the prior experience in sinful deeds will not fear them – The verse does not simply state that as a fact, but implies that such people are treading the path of self destruction, by indulging more and more in sinful deeds.
With this verse, vaLLuvar makes it clear as to who are all sinful, and who are fearful of sins. Since he has likened “being sinful” to arrogance, he implies that sinful acts stem out of arrogance. The self-importance and the arrogance born out of that are the fountainhead of sinful deeds. But for this straight forward truth, the verse records just a well known observartion.
“While sinful will not fear to do deeds dreadful
Virtuous ones fear such arroagance of awful”
தமிழிலே:
தீவினையார் – தீவினைகளிலே முன்பே திளைத்தவர்கள்
அஞ்சார் – தீவினைகளைச் செய்ய அஞ்ச மாட்டார்கள்
விழுமியார் – சீரிய குணத்தை உடையவர்கள்
அஞ்சுவர் – செய்வதற்கும், ஏன் நினைப்பதற்குமே
தீவினை என்னும் – தீவினைகள் என்று சொல்லப்படுகிற
செருக்கு – அறிவு மயக்கம், ஆணவம் (தீவினையே ஆணவத்தினால் வருவது தானே?)
அறிவு மயக்கத்தால் ஏற்படக்கூடிய தீவினைகளை எண்ணுதற்கும், செய்தலுக்கும் அஞ்சிடுவர் சீரிய ஒழுக்கத்தினர். தீவினைகளிலேயே ஊறித்திளைத்தவர்கள், அவைகளை செய்வதற்கு சற்றுமஞ்சிடார். முன்னரே பழகியதால் அவர்களுக்கு அத்தீவினைகளில் ஈடுபடுதற்கு தயக்கமும் பயமும் கிடையாது.
இக்குறளினால் வள்ளுவர், யார் தீவினையொழுகுபவர், யார் அவற்றுக்கு அஞ்சுபவர் என்று தெளிவுபடுத்துகிறார். தீவினையெனும் செருக்கு என்றதால், தீவினையை ஆணவமென்னுக் குணத்தினால் உருவாகுவதையும் உணர்த்துகிறார். தான் என்கிற எண்ணமும் அதனால் உருவாகிற அகந்தையுமே தீவினகளில் ஊற்றுக்கண் என்பதை குறிப்பாக உணர்த்துகிறார். அஃதன்றி இக்குறள் சொல்லவருங் கருத்து எல்லோரும் அறிதந்ததே.
