மறந்தும் பிறன்கேடு சூழற்க சூழின்
அறஞ்சூழும் சூழ்ந்தவன் கேடு.
               (குறள் 204: தீவினையச்சம் அதிகாரம்)
Transliteration:
maRandum piRankEDu sUzhaRga sUzhin
aRanjchUzhum sUzhndavan kEDu
maRandum – Even forgetfully
piRan kEDu – Doing harm to others
sUzhaRga – do not indend (to others)
sUzhin – if you do (intend harm)
aRam chUzhum – the god of justice will render
sUzhndavan – such person who thinks harm (to other_
kEDu – punishment
“Never indend harm to others – Otherwise
The reprimand of justice shall not be nice”
A person must not, even forgetfully think harm or evil do for others. If it is thought, the person who thinks so, will have appropriate reprimand from the God of justice. We can infer, even thinking harm to others will have its drastic sentence of justice.
In Parimelazhagar’s commentary, it is said that God of justice will think harm to persons who think harm to others. This does not seem to fit the definition of God. A God is a supreme being devoid of anger or thought of intending harm to someone. Even the so called punishment we attribute from God, is to mend the person who errs.
It is difficult to surmise how vaLLuvar wrote such a verse where he talks about “God of justice thinks harm” even if it is to a person who thinks harm to others. Such a thought is not acceptable anyday as God form is not rancorous to think or cause harm.
தமிழிலே:
மறந்தும்ஒருவர் மறந்தும் கூட
பிறன்கேடு – பிறர்க்கு தீங்கு நினைத்தலை
சூழற்க – எண்ணத்தினை ஒழிக்க வேண்டும்
சூழின் – அவ்வாறு எண்ணினால்
அறஞ்சூழம் – நீதிகடவுள் எண்ணிவிடும்
சூழ்ந்தவன் – தீங்கு எண்ணியவனுக்குத்
கேடு – தீங்கினை
ஒருவர் பிறருக்கு மறந்தும்கூட தீங்கினை எண்ணாதொழுக வேண்டும். அங்ஙனமின்றி எண்ணினால், தீங்கு எண்ணுபவருக்குத் தக்க தண்டனையை நீதிக்கடவுள் எண்ணிவிடுவார். இக்குறளால் தீமையை நினைத்தாலே தீமை உண்டாகிவிடும் என்பது சொல்லப்படுகிறது. 
பரிமேலழகர் உரையில் அறக்கடவுள் பிறர்க்கு தீங்கு எண்ணுபவருக்கு தீங்கை எண்ணிவிடும் என்று காண்கிறது. கடவுள் என்பவன் பிறருக்கு கேடு விளைவிக்க நினைப்பவன் அல்லன். தவறு செய்பவர்களுக்கும் தவறை உணர்த்தி திருத்துவானே தவிர. அவர்களுக்கு கேட்டினை நினைக்கவோ, செய்யவோ செய்யாது. தண்டனை என்பதும் கூட தவறை உணரச்செய்யத்தான்.
வள்ளுவர் எதை நினைத்து இவ்வாறு எழுதினாரோ, இக்குறளின் “அறக்கடவுள் கேட்டினை நினைக்கும்” என்னும் கருத்து ஒத்துக்கொள்ள முடியாது.
இன்றைய குறள்:
நினைவிறந்தும் தீயபிறர்க் கெண்ணாதே – எண்ணின்
நினைவருந்த நீதிசெ யும்

    The commentary of parimelazhagar in itself is incorrect , and commenting on thiruvalluvar using that as reference is plain idiotic if one wants to understand thiruvalluvar one has to develop their knowledge of tamil etymology, literature , historical contexts etc. NOW for the word ‘aram’ doesn’t mean ‘god of justice’ at all. (Coz thiruvalluvar refers to only one single god and only lists out that single god’s 8 properties.) It simply means the laws of nature. And the second ‘choozhum’ means ‘engulf’.

      First of all, thanks for reading and expressing your opinion on this commentary. After all everyone is entitled to their reading and understanding of what is being said. At least it is in the path of finding the “meipporuL”. Parimelazhagar was the product of his times and had his own reasoning for what he wrote. After all, he was only after “maNakkkuDavar” in his commentary.. Though vaLLuvar implies a single God, in the 25th Chapter of NeethAr perumai, he refers to Indira.

      ஐந்தவித்தான் ஆற்றல் அகல்விசும்பு ளார்கோமான்
      இந்திரனே சாலுங் கரி.

      Read it from “agal visumbuLAr komAn indiranE”.

      However one may want to twist it to establish, it is irrefutable here that he refers to the head of Celestials as referred in purANAs. There are other places he refers to other Gods subtly.. So to categorically reject and call Parimelazhagar “idiotic” is irreverential to the great work he has done as the pioneer.

      Anybody who has been in ascetic path would realize that the Godhead is one and is in everything that “is” life. So, if vaLLuvar wrote it for common folks, he would not have taken that path to make the people believe that there was one God only..

      Once again, everybody is entitled to their own interpretation and what suits them. The essence is NOT in these petty discussions.. The purpose of KURAL is much higher than this.
