துறந்தார்க்குத் துப்புரவு வேண்டி மறந்தார்கொல்
மற்றை யவர்கள் தவம்.
(குறள் 262: தவம் அதிகாரம்)
Transliteration:
thuRandhArkkuth thuppuravu vENDi maRandhArkol
maRRai yavargaL thavam
thuRandhArkkuth – for those who are ascetic
thuppuravu vENDi – to do services and take care of them with food, dresses and place to stay
maRandhArkol – can they forget? (penance that they can also do for their salvation)
maRRaiyavargaL – those who are in family the strife of family life
thavam – penance
Dwelling in family life, tending to the needs of ascetics, can one forget that they can also do the penance and attain salvation – is the apparent question of this verse.
It is difficult to surmise what this verse intends to say, even by reading other commentaries, which are all direct translation of how the verse reads. What does vaLLuvar mean? Does he say, doing service and tending to ascetics is wrong? Or does he say, instead others can do penance themselves for their own salvation? But he has also indicated, in the previous verse, even for that, one must have done penance in previous births.. Very confusing verse from vaLLuvar.
In doing the services for the ascetics, and for caring them,
Can family people forget penance, even possible for them?
தமிழிலே:
துறந்தார்க்குத் – இல்லறத்தைத் துறந்து இறைப்பொருளை குறித்து இருப்போருக்கு
துப்புரவு வேண்டி – வேண்டிய பணிவிடைகள் செய்வதிலே (உணவு, உடை, இருக்கை)
மறந்தார்கொல் – (தமக்கும் உரித்தான தவத்தை) மறந்து விடலாகுமா?
மற்றையவர்கள் – இல்லறத்தையே பற்றி நிற்பவர்கள்
தவம் – தமக்கு இயலக்கூடிய தவ ஒழுக்கத்தை?
இல்லறத்திலேயே உழன்று மற்ற துறவிகளுக்கு பணிவிடைகள் செய்து, அவர்களுக்குத் தேவையான உணவு, உடை, இருக்கை இவற்றையே கவனித்துக் கொண்டிருப்பவர்களுக்கு, தாமும் தவத்துக்கு உரியன செய்வதற்கு இயலும் என்பது மறக்கலாமா?
இக்குறள் என்ன சொல்கிறது என்று புரியவில்லை? மற்ற உரையாசிரியர்கள் உரையும் அவ்வாறே!. இல்லறத்தில் இருப்பவர்கள் துறவிகளுக்கு பணிவிடை செய்வதைத் தவறு என்கிறாரா? அல்லது, அவ்வறு செய்வதைவிட தாம் தவம் செய்து உய்யலாமே என்கிறாரா?. முந்தையகுறளில், அவ்வாறு தவம் செய்வதற்கும் முற்பிறப்பில் தவம் செய்திருக்க வேண்டும் என்று சொல்கிறார். வள்ளுவரின் குழப்பும் குறள்களில் இதுவொன்று.
இன்றெனது குறள்:
துறவியரைப் பேணுதற்காய் தாம்தவம் நீங்கித்
துறந்து மறத்தல்நன் றோ
அவனிவன் பக்கங்கள்...
