தன்நெஞ் சறிவது பொய்யற்க பொய்த்தபின்
தன்நெஞ்சே தன்னைச் சுடும்.
(குறள் 293: வாய்மை அதிகாரம்)
Transliteration:
Thannen charivadhu poyyaRka poyththapin
thannenchE thannaich chuDum
Than nencharivadhu – What one’s own heart only knows as truth
poyyaRka – let it not be twisted to be false or untrue, for others
poyththapin – if they are false or untrue
thannenchE – own heart
thannaich chuDum – will burn the self (in guilt)
One must not engage in falsehood for what within his heart is known to be otherwise. If he does, his own guilt will burn like fire to bring him down to his self-destruction or downfall.
This is true for almost anyone with conscience. Even if the world does not know what a persons falsehood is, his own heart and conscience will stand as witness; and that sense of guilt can simply slowly kill him. This is possible, only for somebody that has grown up with the teachings of good and bad and has some sense of moral fear! If a person has not been brought up that way, it is doubtful that this sensitivity exists;
Never engage in falsehood for what your heart knows otherwise
As guilt of falsehood will burn in the heart as fire to self despise”
தமிழிலே:
தன் நெஞ்சறிவது – தன்னுடைய நெஞ்சம் அறிந்த உண்மையேயானலும் மட்டுமேயானாலும் (மற்றவர் அறியாதது)
பொய்யற்க – பிறரிடம் அதைத் திரித்து, உண்மைக்கு மாறாக கூறாதீர்
பொய்த்தபின் – அவ்வாறு பொய்யாகப் பேசியபின் (முந்தைய குறளின் விலக்கு பயனாகாத போது)
தன்நெஞ்சே – தன்னுடைய நெஞ்சகமே, (தம்முடைய பொய்யினால்)
தன்னைச் சுடும் – தன்னையே சுட்டு எரிக்கும் நெருப்பென (அரித்துக்கொல்லும்)
தன்னுடைய நெஞ்சுக்கு மட்டுமே அறிந்த ஒரு குற்றத்தினை பிறர் அறியார் என்று அக்குற்றத்திற்காக பொய்யுரைப்பது கூடாது. ஏனெனில் அவ்வாறு பொய்யுரைத்தபின்னர், அப்பொய்யின் காரணமாக தன்னுடைய நெஞ்சே தன்னைச் சுட்டெரித்துவிடும்.
இது பொதுவாக மனசாட்சி உள்ளவர்களுக்குப் பொருந்துவது. ஒருவர் பிறருக்குத் தெரியாது என்று பொய்யுரைத்தாலும், அவரது குற்ற உணர்வே அவர்களை அரித்து தீராத உளைச்சலுக்கு ஆளாக்கிவிடும். உளவியலின்படி பார்த்தால், சிறுவயதிலிருந்தே இவை நல்லவை, இவை தீயவை என்று சொல்லி வளர்க்கப்பட்ட எல்லோருக்குமே அவர்கள் தவறு செய்துவிட்டு பிறரிடம் மறைக்க முயலும் போது குற்ற உணர்வு ஏற்படும். அவ்வாறு சொல்லி வளர்க்கப்படாதவர்களுக்கு நெஞ்சம் அறியும் நீதியுண்டா? அவர்களிடம் குற்றவுணர்வும் கூட இருக்குமா என்பது ஐயத்துக்குரியது.
அறநெறிச்சாரப்பாடல் (206), ”தன்னைத்தன் நெஞ்சம் கரியாகத் தானடக்கிற் பின்னைத்தான் எய்தா நலனில்லை” என்று இதே கருத்தை ஒட்டி கூறுகிறது.
