இன்னா எனத்தான் உணர்ந்தவை துன்னாமை
வேண்டும் பிறன்கண் செயல்.
(குறள் 316: இன்னாசெய்யாமை அதிகாரம்)
Transliteration:
innA enaththAn uNarndhavai thunnAmai
vENDum piRankaN seyal.
innA ena – That which is bitter pain (to a person)
ththAn uNarndhavai – and has experienced so
thunnAmai vENDum – should not think to do to
piRankaN – others
seyal – of doing the same to (others)
One must not intend doing, to others what he or she has experienced as bitter pain. When a person has felt the pain of some unpleasant happening, most likely they won’t consider doing the same to others. VaLLuvar has written as caution to those, who inspite of having experienced, still would indulge in causing such pain to others, without thinking how hurtful it was when they experienced the same or similar pain or hurt.

தமிழிலே:
இன்னா எனத் – துன்பம் தருபவை என்று
தான் உணர்ந்தவை – தாம் உணர்ந்தவற்றை, அறிந்தவற்றை
துன்னாமை வேண்டும் – எண்ணாதிருக்க வேண்டும்
பிறன்கண் – பிறரிடத்தில்
செயல் – அச்செயல்களை
ஒருவர் தாமே அனுபவித்து இவை துன்பம் தருவன என்று உணர்ந்த செயல்களைப் பிறரிடத்துச் செய்ய எண்ணாமல் இருக்கவேண்டும். பிறர்க்கு ஒருவர் செய்யும் துன்பத்தின் வலியை அவரே முதலில் உணர்ந்திருந்தால், பெரும்பாலும் ஒருவர் மற்றவர்க்கு அத்துன்பத்தைச் செய்யமாட்டார். அப்படி உணர்ந்திருந்தும் தாம் எவ்வாறு ஒத்த அனுபவத்தை உணர்ந்திருக்கிறோம் என்பதை மறந்து பிறர்க்குத் துன்பத்தை எண்ணிவிடக்கூடாது என்று இக்குறளை எழுதியுள்ளார் வள்ளுவர்.
பழமொழி நானூறு இதை அழகான வரிகளில், “வினைப்பயன் ஒன்றின்றி வேற்றுமை கொண்டு நினத்துப் பிறர்பனிப்பச் செய்யாமை வேண்டும்” என்று சொல்கிறது.

துன்பமென்று தானறிந்த தொன்றும் கருதாமை
நன்றாம் பிறர்க்குச் செய
