நல்லாறு எனப்படுவது யாதெனின் யாதொன்றும்
கொல்லாமை சூழும் நெறி.
(குறள் 324: கொல்லாமை அதிகாரம்)
Translitertation:
nallARu enappaDuvadhu yAdhenin yAdhonRum
kollAmai sUzhum neRi
nallARu enappaDuvadhu – that which is good virtuous way
yAdhenin – what is considered as that is
yAdhonRum – every form of life (of one sense to 5 senses)
kollAmai – not killing (for personal survival)
sUzhum – to be preserved as
neRi – as a virtuous way
The virtue of not killing any life form – be it a life of one sense or five senses, is known to be the good virtue to follow in the life of penitents. May be the repetition of this thought has made people guess vaLLuvar to be a Jain monk. Regardless, this verse is definitely not a verse of any significant substace. It sounds like a repetition of the same thought with different words, without any added value.
Infact the previous verse the same thought was said in the context of life forms of one sense to five senses. Once again an instance where one is left to feel this verse may be a chapter-filler.
“There is none better virtue than not killing
Any of form life by the virtue of preserving”
நல்லாறு எனப்படுவது – நல்ல அறவழி எனப்படுவது
யாதெனின் – எதுவென்றால்
யாதொன்றும் – எவ்வுயிரையும் (பரி: ஓரறிவுமுதல் ஐந்தறிவு வரை)
கொல்லாமை – கொல்லுதலைச் செய்யாது
சூழும் – காக்கின்ற
நெறி – அறமாம்.
உலகில் உள்ள எந்த உயிரையும் கொல்லாமல் காக்கின்ற அறமே நல்ல அறவழியாகும். ஆறு என்பது வழி என்பதால், நல்லாறு என்பது நல்வழியாகும். இக்குறள் ஒரு வலிமை குறைந்த ஒன்றாகும். இதுவரை சொல்லப்பட்ட குறள்களிலும், இவ்வதிகாரத்தில் இன்னும் வரப்போகிற குறள்களிலும் இல்லாத கருத்தொன்றும் இதில் இல்லை. மீண்டும் ஒரு அதிகார எண்ணிக்கை நிரப்பியாகவே தெரிகிறது.
சென்ற குறளில் சொல்லப்பட்ட கருத்தும், ஓரறிவு முதல், ஐந்தறிவு வரை உயிர்களை கொல்லாமையை வலியுறுத்திச் சொல்லப்பட்டதே! சிறப்புக் கருத்து என்று கருதப்படக்கூடிய ஒன்றும் இங்கு இல்லை.

எவ்வுயிர்க்கும் கொல்லமை எண்ணும் நெறியொன்றே
இவ்வுலகோர் நன்நெறி யாம்
