இயல்பாகும் நோன்பிற்கொன்று இன்மை உடைமை

iyalbAgum nOnbiRkk(u) onRu inmai uDaimai
mayalAgum maRRum peyarththu
Transliteration:
iyalbAgum – it is natural
nOnbiRkk(u) – for penance
onRu inmai – to not have attachment in anything
uDaimai – attachments
mayalAgum – is be drawn into the delusion or madness of
maRRum – and so on (to be read along with uDamai)
peyarththu – to have (attachments – uDamai)
It is natural for ascetics to not have anything as their own belonging. To have attachment in material comforts give delusion to the pursuit towards higher knowledge and will swerve a pursuant ascetic away from the path. If there is any attachement towards even a single materialistic comfort for an ascetic that slowly develops in to multiple interests and eventually completely takes them away from their penitent pursuit.
There is a short story that we have to recall here. An ascetic was given a place to stay by a concerned individual to help him pursue his path without any external interference. The place had some the menance of rats; a cat was brought in to take care of the menace. Soon to feed cat milk, a cow was brought in; subsequently a milkman and his family. Soon the hermitage was thronging with more people, for various reasons all stemming from the single reason of menance of rats; the ascetic was diverted from his intended pursuit to manage a big establishment, all because of a little giving in to the comfort of a place for him to stay. The underlying message is the essence and what exactly this verse alludes to.
It is in the nature of ascetics to be devoid of attachment
Desire to possess even a little is delusion of sacrament

இயல்பாகும் – மிகவும் சாதாரணமாக நடக்கின்றவொன்று
நோன்பிற்கு – துறவுக்கும் தவத்திற்கும்
ஒன்று இன்மை – எவ்விதப்பற்றும் இல்லாமலிருத்தல்
உடைமை – ஆனால் பற்று
மயலாகும் – மயக்கமாகும் (அறிவு மயக்கம்)
மற்றும் – பிறவுடன்
பெயர்த்து – இருப்பது (எது? பற்று!)
தமக்கென ஒர் உடமையும் இல்லாமலிருத்தல் துறவிகளுக்கு இயல்பான ஒன்றே! உடமைகளில் பற்று கொள்வதும், கொள்ள நினைப்பதும் அவர்களுக்கு அறிவு மயக்கத்தைத் தந்து துறவிலிருந்து நீக்கிவிடும். எல்லாப்பொருள்களிலும் பற்றினை விட்டுவிட்டு துறவு மேற்கொண்டவர்களுக்கு ஏதேனும் ஒன்றின் மேல் பற்று ஏற்பட, அதுவே அறிவு மயக்கத்தைத் தந்து பலவாகப் பெருகி துறவு நிலையிலிருந்து விலக்கிவிடும்.
எல்லோரும் அறிந்த குட்டிக்கதையொன்றை இங்கே நினவுகூறுவது நல்லது, துறந்த ஒருவருக்கு ஒருவர் தங்க இடம் கொடுத்தார். அவ்விடத்தில் எலித்தொல்லைத் தாங்கமுடியாமல் போக, அதற்காகப் பூனை வளர்த்தாராம் துறவி. அப்பூனையின் பால் தேவைக்காக, ஒரு மாட்டையும், அதை பராமரிக்க ஒரு கோனாரையும், அவன் காரணமாக, அவனுடைய குடும்பமும் குழந்தைகளும் வந்து சேர, இவ்வாறு தனித்திருந்த துறவிக்கு, ஒன்றன் பின் ஒன்றாக தேவைகளும், உறவுகளும் ஏற்பட்டதாகக் கதை. அதனுடைய சுருக்கமே இக்குறள்.
