காமம் வெகுளி மயக்கம் இம்மூன்றன்
நாமம் கெடக்கெடும் நோய்.
(குறள் 360: மெய்யுணர்தல் அதிகாரம்)
Transliteration:
kAmam veguLi mayakkam immUnRan
nAmam keDakkeDum nOi
kAmam – unmeasured and excessive desire or lust
veguLi – anger, wrath
mayakkam – delusional thinking
immUnRan – that which are known as three enemies
nAmam – even their names
keDak – when do not enter in the hearts,
keDum – will be devoid of
nOi – the misery that befalls because of those three enemies
A simple and effective verse that targets the three primary enemies that the primary reason for all misries. The verse says that getting rid of even the names of the lust, anger and delusion in mind, will spoil the chances of misery to hit a person.
The excessive desire or lust will result in disappointment if something is not attained, resulting in anger and that will make the ability to think calmly to wither away and the thinking becomes delusional. To be devoid of these three enemies, one must remove these words from their vocabulary first, or in other words, their dictionary does not have these words at all.
There are many literary works that have cited these three enemies as to quell. Manimekalai, KambarAmayaNam, Thirumanthiram and nAlaDiyAr all have verses that talk about these three in the same light.

காமம் – ஆசை, விருப்பு, விழைவு
வெகுளி – சினத்தல்
மயக்கம் – அறிவு மயக்கம்
இம்மூன்றன் – முப்பகையெனப்படும் இம்மூன்றினுடைய
நாமம் – பெயர்களும் கூட
கெடக் – உள்ளத்தில் ஏறாமல் கெடுமானால்
கெடும் – இல்லாமல் கெடுமாம்
நோய் – இம்முப்பகைகளால் வரக்கூடிய துன்பங்கள்
ஒரு எளிமையானதும், தைக்கும்படியானதுமான குறளிது. எல்லாத்துன்பங்களுக்கும் காரணமான முப்பகைவர்கள் என்று சொல்லப்படும், காமமாகிய விருப்பு, விழைவு அல்லது ஆசை, சினத்தல், மற்று அறிவு மயக்கம் இவற்றின் பெயர்களை தம்முள்ளத்திலிருந்து நீக்கியவர்களுக்கு துன்பமாகிய நோய் வராமல் கெடும். தம்முள்ளத்திலிருந்து என்றது, அவற்றை தங்களுடைய சொல்லாட்சியிலிருந்து நீக்கிய நிலை, அவர்கள் அகராதியில் இல்லாத நிலை.
ஏன்? காமம் என்பது மிகுதியான புலன் விழைவு என்ற அளவில் மட்டும் என்ற அளவில் கொச்சைப்படுத்தப்பட்டு விட்டாலும், அது பொதுவாக ஆசைகளைத் தான் குறிக்கும். ஆசைகள் ஏமாற்றங்களுக்கும், ஏமாற்றங்கள் கோபங்களுக்கும், கோபங்கள் அறிவு மயக்கத்துக்கும் காரணமாகி சிந்தனையை மேலும் மழுங்க அடித்துவிடும். ஆசைகளே அனத்து அழிவுகளுக்கும் காரணம் என்ற அடிப்படை உண்மையைச் சொல்கிற குறள்.
இம்மூன்று பகைவர்களைப் பற்றியும் சொல்லிய இலக்கியப்பாடல்கள் ஏராளம். எல்லாவற்றையும் பட்டியலிட்டு மேற்கோளாகச் சொல்லாவிட்டாலும், இதோ சில.
“யாம்மேல் உரைத்தப் பொருள்கட்கெல்லாம் காமம் வெகுளி மயக்கம் காரணம்” என்றே மணிமேகலைக் கூறுகிறது.
“காமம் வெகுளி மயக்க்ம் இவை கடிந்த் தேமம் பிடித்திருந்தேனுக்கு” என்கிறது திருமந்திரப்பாடல்.
“காமம் முதலா முக்குறும்பற வெறிந்த வினை” என்று அம்மூன்றையும் குறும்பு என்கிறான் கம்பன்.
“முக்குற்றம் நீக்கி முடியும் அளவெல்லாம் துக்கத்துள் நீக்கிவிடும்” என்கிறது நாலடியார்.
