I am truly happy to be beginning this last chapter of ARATHTHUP PAL, a significant milestone of this effort personally for me. On May 5th I am planning to finish, God willing, this 1st part of the Monumental work – THIRUKKURAL

38: (Fate – ஊழ்)
[Fate is the belief in almost all the cultures all over the world. Pre-ordained is what we normally call it. Typically it is due to the deeds of a soul in its previous births or earlier to something happening. Fate can be ill or good. There are babies born with silver spoon while others are born with defects or abject poverty. But for something as “fate”, how else can we explain these disparities, except negating the very concept of God? After all we place Him as absolutely merciful, infinite source of love and compassion. Despite sincere efforts and untiring work some people never see the fruit of their labor, while someothers win a lottery almost every day. All these are attributed to fates of individuals. Only an insignificant minority of rationalists would call them chance occurences. vaLLuvar being a staunch believer of Higher being, has devoted this chapter of much attributed but less comprehended FATE!]

ஆகூழால் தோன்றும் அசைவின்மை கைப்பொருள்
போகூழால் தோன்றும் மடி.
(குறள் 371: ஊழ் அதிகாரம்)
Transliteration:
AkUzhAl thOnRum asaivinmai kaipporuL
pOkUzhAl thOnRum maDi
AkUzhAl – because of the fate that makes it possible
thOnRum – will sprout
asaivinmai – the firmness and the determination
kaipporuL– to make wealth
pOkUzhAl – Because the fate that bring destruction
thOnRum – will sprout
maDi – laziness
Through this first verse of this chapter, vaLLuvar says a simple rule about the fate. A person’s good fate will give him determination, enthusiasm and hence the wealthy life. If the person is illfated, it will remove the good things and will make the person lazy accordingly. We can interpret the verse in a different way too. Only lazy person will have the illfate. Those with determination and enthusiasm will be wealthy in all aspects of life. We call them illfate and good fate respectively.
Those who doubt if the fate can be rewritten or altered, vaLLuvar leaves a hint on a rule. For good things to happen in life one must be rid of laziness!
“Good fate gives encouragement with firmness and the wealth
Illfate that removes the wealthy possibility makes one a lazy filth”
தமிழிலே:
ஆகூழால் – ஆக்கம் தரக்கூடிய விதியால்
தோன்றும் – தோன்றுவது
அசைவின்மை – உறுதி மற்றும் அதனால் பிறக்கும் ஊக்கமும்
கைப்பொருள் – மற்றும் செல்வமும் (நலன்களே செல்வம்)
போகூழால் – ஆக்கத்தை நீக்கும் விதியானால்
தோன்றும் – அதனால் தோன்றுவது
மடி – சோம்பல்தான்!
இவ்வதிகாரத்தின் முதற்குறளில் ஒரு எளிய விதியைச் சொல்லுகிறார் விதியைப் பற்றி. ஒருவரின் நல்ல விதியாலேயே அவருக்கு ஊக்கந்தரும் உறுதியும், அதனால் வாழ்க்கை வளங்களும் வரும். விதி கெடுப்பதாக அல்லது நன்மை நடப்பதை நீக்குவதாக இருக்குமானால், அதனால் அதற்கு ஏதுவாக ஒருவரிடம் சோம்பல்தான் மண்டிவரும் என்கிறார் வள்ளுவர். இக்குறளையே நாம் இவ்வாறும் பொருள் கொள்ளலாம். சோம்பேறிகளுக்குத்தான் கெடுதல் வரும். உறுதியும் ஊக்கமும் உள்ளவர்களுக்கு வாழ்க்கை நலங்கள் வந்து சேரும். இவற்றை நாம் முறையே கெட்ட விதியென்றும் நல்ல விதியென்றும் கூறலாம். விதியை மாற்றி எழுத முடியுமா என்று கேட்பவர்களுக்கு இங்கே ஒரு பூடகமாக விதியும் கூறுகிறார் வள்ளுவர். நல்லவை நடக்க சோம்பலை விடுக்க என்று!

நீக்கும் விதிதரும் சோம்பு
