நுண்ணிய நூல்பல கற்பினும் மற்றுந்தன்
உண்மை யறிவே மிகும்.
(குறள் 373: ஊழ் அதிகாரம்)
Transliteration:
nuNNiya nUlpala kaRpinum maRRumthan
uNmai yarivE migum
nuNNiya – Containing extremely subtle concepts
nUl pala – many knowledge giving books
kaRpinum – even if one learns them
maRRumthan – even after that (because of the fate)
uNmaiyarivE – whatever was his brain’s capacity earlier
migum – would only be there
Regardless of how much one has studied subtle, sophisticated knowledge, the force of fate keeps one in the state of what the individual is bestowed with or destined for – so says this verse. If the fate is destructive one, it wont even let someone utilize the learning when needed.
Afterall we are all familiar with the story of Karna , whose acquired knowledge of how to use Brahmastra, so deservingly learned from Parashurma was not useful at the crucial moment as he forgot the invocatory mantra. He could not use it against Arjuna, which would certainly destroyed Arjuna and changed the course of war. Such incidents show that “learning” loses to cruel fate and this we can experience in our personal lives too.
Another example of “iLangO” adigaL who inorder to disprove the predicted destiny, relinquished what could have been his throne to become a monk is a recorded incident in the pages of history.
Though this chapter and this verse imply that there is none mightier than the fate, another saying that one can conquer fate with brain (knowledge) – “vidhiyai madhiyAl vellalAm” is also in vogue as long the this duel of fate over learning has existed.
“Though learned in many subjects of subtle nature,
The force of fate will only keep what fits the stature”

நுண்ணிய – நுட்பமான கருத்துக்களைக் கொண்ட
நூல்பல – நூல்கள் பலவற்றையும் தேடி
கற்பினும் – ஆழ்ந்து கற்றாலும்
மற்றுந்தன் – அதற்குப் பின்னும் (ஊழின் வலிமையால்)
உண்மையறிவே – அவருக்கு எந்த அளவுக்கு அறிவு இருந்ததோ, அதுவே
மிகும் – எஞ்சியிருக்கும்
ஒருவர் எந்த அளவுக்கு நுட்பமான அறிவைத் தரும் நூல்களைப் படித்தாலும், ஊழின் வலி அவருக்கு எந்த அளவுக்கு அறிவு இருந்ததோ, அதுமட்டுமே எஞ்சியிருக்கும்படி செய்யும் என்கிறது இக்குறள். கெடுக்கும் ஊழாயிருப்பின் அது கற்றதையும் சரியாகப் பயனாக்கிக் கொள்ள இயலாது செய்து, அவருக்கு இயல்பாம் அறிவிலேயே அவரை நிறுத்திவிடும்.
அதற்கு உதாரணமாக கர்ணன் பரசுராமரிடம் பெற்ற சாபத்தைச் சொல்லலாம். அச்சாபத்தினால், பிரம்ம அத்திரத்தை தகுந்த நேரத்தில் மகாபாரதத்தில் தன்னுடைய எதிரியாம் அருச்சுனம் மேல் எறியமுடியாமல் போனது. கற்றுத் தேர்ந்தது ஊழ் வலியின் முன் பயனற்று போனது,
இரண்டாயிரம் வருடங்களுக்குள்ளான சரித்திரப்பதிவில், இளங்கோ அடிகள் தனக்குத்தான் என்று கணிக்கப்பட்ட மணிமுடியைத் துறந்து, துறவியான கதை நாமெல்லோரும் அறிவோம். இதில் கணித்தவருடைய அறிவை, மற்றவருக்கு விதிக்கப்பட்ட பாதை, மாற்றியது.
நாலடியாரின் பாடல் “கனம் பொதிந்த நூல்விரித்துக் காட்டினும் கீழ்தன் மனம் புரிந்தவாறே மிகும்” என்கிறது. பழமொழிப்பாடல், “பொறியின் வகைய கருமம் அதனால் அறிவினை யூழே அடும்” என்கிறது. இப்பாடல் கல்வியினும் ஊழின் வலி பெரிது என்கிறது. இதற்கு மாற்றாக “விதியை மதியால் வெல்லலாம்” என்னும் கூற்றும் வழக்கத்தில் உண்டு.
