நல்லவை எல்லாஅந் தீயவாம் தீயவும்
நல்லவாம் செல்வம் செயற்கு.
(குறள் 375: ஊழ் அதிகாரம்)
Transliteration:
Nallavai ellAan thIyavAm thIyavum
nallavAm selvam seyaRku
Nallavai ellAan – sometimes, even the good things done (ill fate)
thIyavAm – will translate to bad outcomes in the pursuit of making wealth
thIyavum – if the time and the fate is good, even the bad things done
nallavAm – will translate to good outcomes and will build wealth
selvam – wealth
seyaRku – in the pursuit of making
In the pursuit of wealth making, though the place, time and the work are in good stand, if the fate is bad, they cannot make their wealth grow. Even if the above three are not good, if the fate is good, the wealth will grow.
This verse can be interpreted differently too. In the pursuit of making wealth, even if someone does all good still it can yield bad out come due to fate. Likewise, even if someone does all bad deeds, if the time and place are right, then the bad deeds will turn to good results to yield wealth.
Though it may appear that to make wealth good or bad deeds done by someone do not count, this verse underlines the influence of “fate” which is determined by ones good or bad deeds in previous birth. The good and bad deeds of birth will have their own effects, again as fate in the following births. As silappadikaaram has one of its three major tenets, “fate follows someone through births”.
Despite good deeds done, for some only bad befalls due to fate;
Others, even if they intend and do bad, have fortune of estate
நல்லவை எல்லாஅந் – சில நேரங்களில் நல்லவை எல்லாம் செய்தாலும்
தீயவாம் – அவை தீயவையாயாகி செல்வம் செய்யாதழிக்கும்
தீயவும் – நேரம் நன்றாக இருப்பின், தீயவையாக செய்தாலும்
நல்லவாம் – அவை நல்லவையாக மாறி செல்வத்தைக் கொணரும்
செல்வம் – செல்வத்தை
செயற்கு – ஆக்குதற்கு செய்யும் முயற்சியில்
செல்வத்தை ஆக்கும் முயற்சியில், இடம், காலம், தொழில் எல்லாம் முறையாக இருந்தாலும், ஒருவருடைய ஊழ்வினை தீயதாக இருந்தால், அவர்களால் செல்வத்தை பெருக்கமுடியாது. ஒருவருக்கு மேலே கூறப்பட்ட மூன்றும் சரிவர இல்லையென்றாலும், அவர்களுடைய ஊழ்வினை நல்லதாக இருந்தால், அவர்களது செல்வம் பெருகும் என்பதே இக்குறளின் கருத்து.
இக்கருத்தையே இவ்வாறு சொல்வதும் உண்டு: செல்வத்தை ஆக்கும் முயற்சியில் நல்லவை எல்லாம் செய்தாலும் சில நேரங்களில் அவை தீயவையாயாகி செல்வம் செய்யாதழிக்கும். நேரமும் காலமும் நன்றாக இருந்தால், தீயவையாக செய்தாலும், அவை நல்லவையாக மாறி செல்வத்தைக் கொணரும்!
செல்வம் செய்தற்கு நல்வினையோ தீவினையோ காரணமில்லை என்பது போல தோன்றினாலும், இக்குறள் அடிக்கோடிடுவது, ஊழ் என்பதன் வலியை. அது நமது முற்பிறப்பின் செய்கைகளால் நிறுவப்பட்டவொன்று. இப்பிறப்பின் நற்செய்கைகளும் தீயசெய்கைகளும் பின்வரும் பிறப்புகளின் ஊழாகத் தொடரும். சிலப்பதிகாரத்தில் சொல்லப்பட்ட “ஊழ்வினை உறுத்து வந்தூட்டலை” நினைவு கொள்ளவேண்டும்.

ஊழாக்கும் தீதினை நன்றாய் திருவுக்காய்
பாழாக்கும் நன்றினைத்தீ தாய்
