ஊழிற் பெருவலி யாவுள மற்றொன்று
சூழினுந் தான்முந் துறும்.
(குறள் 380: ஊழ் அதிகாரம்)
Transliteration:
UzhiR peruvali yAvuLa maRRondRu
sUzhinum thAnmun dhuRum
UzhiR – other than fate
peruvali – stronger
yAvuLa – what else is there?
maRRondRu – even if other ways to circumvent fates affects
sUzhinum – surround a person as protection
thAn mundhuRum – it will surface ahead of those with force.
Not only this verse is the last verse of this chapter, but the last one of the major section of “aRathtup pAl” – a canto on Virtues. Beginning with obeisance to the omniscient God, the canto ends with the verse stating that fate is stronger than anything else. The verse asks, “what else is more powerful than fate? Afterall, even if there are ways to circumvent its effect, somehow fate gets ahead to tread its course ahead.
Is fate more powerful than the supreme Godhead? We need to recall the two verses from the very first chapter of Obeisance to Godhead. “The effect of deeds of past and future will not befall on some who sings the glory of the Godhead”. Also, “one who reaches the holy feel of Godhead, who has no desire nor otherwise, will never face any miseries”.
Which is true? The power of Godhead or that of fate? Of course the holy feet of Godhead is definitely more powerful than fate is what me must believe in.
Kamban expresses a similar thought in KambaramAyanam in a few places.
Though all thoughts expressed here, never are applicable all times or to everyone, and even may be contradictory, the monumental work of ThirukkuraL is truly admirable for its organization and many a thought it puts forth before us to think about.
Before I conclude this major section, this is what I have to say: What I started playfully, totally consumed me for over a year now, and writing this commentary has become part of my daily life. Is it fate or the blessing of my God? Whatever it is, let it keep me at this to continue to complete the work I started.

தான் முந்துறும் – அவற்றைப் பயனற்றதாக்கி தானே முந்திக்கொள்ளும்
இக்குறள் இவ்வதிகாரத்தின் இறுதிக்குறள் மட்டுமல்லாது அறத்துப்பாலின் இறுதிக் குறளுமாம். இறைவணக்கத்தில் தொடங்கி, ஊழைவிட வலியது ஏதுளது என்று முடிகிறது இப்பால். ஊழைவிட வலியது ஏதுளது? அதை விலக்குவதற்குரிய பிற வழிமுறைகள் ஒருவருக்கு இருந்தாலும், அவற்றையெல்லாம் புறந்தள்ளி தானே முந்திக்கொண்டு ஒருவரை அவருக்கு விதிக்கப்பட்ட வகையான் செலுத்தும் தன்மையதாம் ஊழ். இறைப்பொருளை விட ஊழ் வலிமை மிக்கதா? முதல் அத்தியாயத்தில் கூறப்பட்ட சில குறள்களை நினைவுகூறுவது நல்லது. “இருள்சேர் இருவினையும் சேரா இறைவன் பொருள்சேர் புகழ் புரிந்தார் மாட்டு” என்றதும், “வேண்டுதல் வேண்டாமை இலானடி சேர்ந்தார்க்கு யாண்டும் இடும்பை இல” என்றதும் பொய்யாயிராவெனில், இறையடி ஊழினையும் விட வலிமை மிக்கது என்பதை மட்டும் நினைவில் கொள்ளவேண்டும்.
கம்பராமாயணத்தில் ஊழின் வலிமையை குறிக்கும் கம்பனுடைய வரிகளைக் காண்போமா?
“சூழ்வினை நான்முகத் தொருவற் சூழினும் ஊழ்வினை ஒருவரால் ஒழிக்கற் பாலதோ?”
“விதிவயம் என்பதை மேற்கொளாவிடின் மதிவலியான் விதி வெல்ல வல்லமோ?” என்ற வரிகளில் வள்ளுவரின் கருத்தையொட்டி கம்பர் பாடியிருக்கிறார்.
சொல்லப்பட்ட அத்துணைக் கருத்துக்களுமே எல்லா காலங்களுக்குமே, எல்லோருக்குமே பொருந்தாவிடினும், முறணானவையாக பல இடங்களில் தோன்றினாலும், வள்ளுவரின் காலகட்டத்துக் சிந்தனைகளாகக் கொண்டு பார்த்தால், நிச்சயமாகப் பாராட்டி வியக்கத்தக்கவைதாம் திருக்குறள் என்னும் சிந்தனைக் கருவூலமும், அதன் அதிகாரங்களை மூன்று பெரிய பகுதிகளாகப் பிரித்த முறைமையும்.
ஏதோ விளையாட்டாக எழுதத்தொடங்கி, அது என்னுடைய அன்றாடாப் பணியாகப் பண்ணியது இறையருளா, அல்லது எனது நல்லூழா? தெரியவில்லை. எதுவாயினும் என்னை இப்பணியை தொடரும் முயற்சியிலே தொடர்ந்து செலுத்தட்டும்.
