கண்ணுடையர் என்பவர் கற்றோர் முகத்திரண்டு
புண்ணுடையர் கல்லா தவர்.
(குறள் 393: கல்வி அதிகாரம்)
Transliteration:
kaNNuDaiyar enbavar kaRROr mugaththiranDu
puNNuDaiyar kallA dhavar
kaNNuDaiyar enbavar –The purpose of having eyes is to be educated. Who has eyes?
kaRROr – only those that are educated
mugaththiranDu- The two (what) on the face
puNNuDaiyar – Have sores (in the place of eyes)
kallAdhavar – those that are uneducated,
The very purpose and use of having eyes is to get educated. Uneducated, are as good as blind with sores in the place of eyes. vaLLiuvar in a later chapter, expresses the same thought differently tby saying “kaNNirkkaNigalam kaNNOTTam ahdhinREl puNNenRuNarap paDum”. Kaliththogai has a similar thinking while mentioning uneducated – “kallAdhu mudhirndhavan kaNNillA nenjam”. The value of education is metaphorically compared to having vision with eyes. As without eyes, none seen,visually, without education none “seen” figuratively.
Who are considered to have eyes, the “learned” are!
Eyes of uneducated are none but mere sores in pair!
தமிழிலே:
கண்ணுடையர் என்பவர் – கண்படைத்ததன் பயன் கல்விபெறுவது; யாவர் கண்படைத்தோர்?
கற்றோர் – கற்றவர்களே!
முகத்திரண்டு – முகத்திலே உள்ள இரண்டு
புண்ணுடையர் – புண்களை உடையவர்களாவர்
கல்லாதவர் – கல்வி அறிவு இல்லாதவர்கள்.
கண்படைத்ததன் பயன், கல்வி பெறுவதுதான். அத்தகைய கல்வியைப் பெறாதவர்கள், கண்ணிருந்தும் குருடர்களே. அவர்கள் கண்களுக்குப்பதிலாக முகத்திலே இரண்டு புண்களை உடையவர்களாகக் கருதப்படுவர். வள்ளுவரே மற்றுமொரு அதிகாரத்தில், “ கண்ணிற் கணிகலம் கண்ணோட்டம் அஃதின்றேல் புண்ணெண் றுணரப் படும்” என்கிறார். கலித்தொகை பாடலொன்று, “கல்லாது முதிர்ந்தவன் கண்ணில்லா நெஞ்சம்” என்கிறது.
இன்றெனது குறள்:
கற்றாரே கண்ணுளோர் கல்லாதார் கண்ணிருந்தும்
அற்றார், அவர்கண்கள் புண்

புண்கள் என்பது சரியாக இருக்கும் என்பதினால் சற்று மாற்றி கீழ்கண்டவாறு கொள்ளலாம்.
கற்றாரே கண்ணுளோர் கல்லாதார் கண்ணிருந்தும்
அற்றாரக், கண்களோபுண் கள்
(அற்றார், அக்கண்களோ புண்கள்) என்றூ ஆகும்.
புண்கள் என்பது சரியாக இருக்கும் என்பதினால் சற்று மாற்றி கீழ்கண்டவாறு கொள்ளலாம்.
