[After a chapter full of verses, stressing the importance of education, its merits and the larger benefits for society etc., vaLLuvar, stresses the importanceof the same by highlighting the lowly stature of being uneducated by citing another chapter full of verses]

அரங்கின்றி வட்டாடி யற்றே நிரம்பிய
நூலின்றிக் கோட்டி கொளல்.
(குறள் 401: கல்வி அதிகாரம்)
Transliteration:
aranginRi vaTTADi yaRRE niRambiya
nUlinRik kOTTik koLal
aranginRi – without proper setup to play the dice game
vaTTADiyaRRE – like playing dice
niRambiya – without fullness of knowledge
nUlinRik – by studying books that give such knowledge
kOTTikkoLal – to speak before the assembly of learned
To speak before the assembly of learned scholars, one must have studied and be full of knowledge from authentic source books. Without which, it will be a humiliating experience and exposition of ignorance. This is like without proper setup of the stage for game of dice or understanding that the stage is biased in favour of opponent,, if somebody enters, it will be a sure loss of game for the person who enters the set up.
This example, probably stems from the story of Mahabharatha where, Dharmaa was dragged into the dice play by the trickery of Kauravas and their scheming architect Sakuni, setting up the stage in their favor. The result of which was utter humiliation by losiing everything including the pride of PAndDvAs, their dear wife PanjAli, By referring to the story without touching the story indicates vaLLuvar’s genius and stress on ill effects of being uneducated in one line.

தமிழிலே:
அரங்கின்றி – சொக்கட்டான் ஆடுகிற கட்டங்கள் அமைந்த களமின்றி
வட்டாடியற்றே – சொக்கட்டான் ஆடுவதுபோலாம்
நிரம்பிய – பெருகிய, நுண்ணிய அறிவினைத் தரும்
நூலின்றிக் – நூற்களினைப் படித்து அறிவினை வளர்த்துக்கொள்ளாமல்
கோட்டிகொளல் – கற்றோர் நிறைந்த அவையில் பேசப்புகுவது.
கற்றோர் நிறைந்த அவையிலே ஒருவர் பேசப்புகும்போது நுண்ணிய நூலறிவிலே சிறந்திருத்தல் மிகவும் இன்றியமையாத ஒன்று. இல்லையென்றால் அவ்வாறு பேசப்புகுந்தவரின் குறையறிவு வெட்டவெளிச்சமாகி, அவருக்கு தீரா அவமானத்தையும், மதிப்பின்மையுமே தரும். இது எவ்வாறு என்றால், சரியாக அமைக்கப்படாத சூதாட்டகளத்திலே, அதாவது எதிராளிக்குச் சாதகமாக களம் இருக்கிறதா என்று கூட அறியாத வகையிலே அமைந்த களத்திலே பகடையுறுட்டி ஆடப்புகுதல் போலாகிவிடும்.
இந்த எடுத்துக்காட்டுக்கு, வள்ளுவர் காலத்திய பகடை ஆட்டம் மட்டுமே காரணமாக இருக்கமுடியாது. பாண்டவர்களின் மூத்தவரான தருமர் கௌரவர் அமைத்த சூதாட்டகளத்தின் தன்மையை முற்றிலுல் ஆராயாது சூதாட புகுந்ததினால், எல்லாவற்றையும் இழந்து, எதைவைத்து இழக்கக்கூடாதோ, அதாவது தங்களின் மனைவியான பாஞ்சாலியயும் இழந்து அவமானப்பட்டு, வனவாசம் புகநேர்ந்ததைச் சுட்டிக்காட்டி கல்லாமையினால் வரும் இழப்புகளையும், அவமானங்களையும் சுட்டிக்காட்டுகிறார் முதற்குறளிலேயே வள்ளுவர்.
