கல்லாதான் ஒட்பம் கழியநன் றாயினும்

கொள்ளார் அறிவுடை யார்.

                         (குறள் 404: கல்வி அதிகாரம்)

Transliteration:

kallAdhAn oTpam kazhiyanan RAyinum

koLLAr aRivuDai yAr

kallAdhAn – one who is uneducated

oTpam – intelligence

kazhiya – in excess

nanRAyinum – if it is good

koLLAr – won’t be considered seriously

aRivuDaiyAr – educated people

Uneducated, yet genius persons have always lived through the pages of history, accomplishing significantly, sometimes, more than the most educated ones. Undoubtedly, education is important to everyone. But that alone does not guarantee intelligence. There are many past and present examples in the Universe that have shown many gems of individuals that have lived an exemplified life with utmost intelligence.

Regardless how it was during the age of vaLLuvar, the thought expressed in this verse is not an accepted one today, including by the learned. Parimelazhagar compares such intelligence of uneducated to, random lines drawn by snails’ movement, which looks like meaningful text.

The verse says thus: The intelligence of uneducated person, however much appreciable, the educated won’t take it seriously. There are references to similar thought  in Pazhamozhi and Sirupanchamoolam.

“The intelligence of uneducated is never taken seriously

 by the erudite community, however impressive obviously”

கல்லாதான் – கல்வி கற்காத ஒருவரின்

ஒட்பம் – அறிவாண்மை

கழிய – மிகவும்

நன்றாயினும் – பாராட்டத்தக்க ஒன்றாயினும்

கொள்ளார் – அதை ஒருபொருட்டாகக் கொள்ளமாட்டார்

அறிவுடையார் – அக்கல்வி அறிவுடையவர்கள்

படிக்காத மேதை என்று கொண்டாடப்படுபவரெல்லாம் கற்றறிந்தவர்களுக்கு ஒரு பொருட்டல்ல என்கிறதா இக்குறள்?  கல்வியறிவு என்பது எல்லோருக்கும் தேவையான ஒன்றுதான். ஆனால், “ஏட்டுச்சுரைக்காய் கவைக்குதவாது” என்று வழக்கும் இருக்கிறது. வெறும் கல்வியறிவு மட்டுமே அறிவாகாது என்பதற்கும் எத்தனையோ வாழ்ந்த, வாழ்கின்ற எடுத்துக்காட்டுகள் உள்ளன.

வள்ளுவர் காலத்தில் எப்படியோ, இன்றைய காலகட்டத்தில் இக்குறளின் கருத்தை பெரும்பாலோர் ஒத்துக்கொள்ளமாட்டார்கள், கற்றறிந்தவர்கள் உட்பட. கல்லாதவரின் அறிவாண்மையைப் பரிமேலழகர் ஏரெலெழுத்து(நத்தை ஊரும்போது உண்டாகும் வரி வடிவு) என்பார். அவரது எடுத்துக்காட்டும், “ஆகுமோ நந்துழுதவெல்லாம் கணக்கு” என்னும் பழமொழிப்பாடலை ஒட்டியது.

இக்குறள் சொல்லும் கருத்து இதுதான். “கல்வி கற்காத ஒருவரின் அறிவாண்மை மிகவும் சிறந்திருந்தாலும், அதை கல்வியறிவு உடையவர்கள் ஒரு பொருட்டாகக் கொள்ளமாட்டார்கள்”.

பழமொழிப்பாடல் வரிகள் ஒன்று, “கல்லாதான் கண்ட கழிநுட்பம் காட்டரிதால்” என்கிறது. சிறுபஞ்சமூலப்பாடல் ஒன்று, “கல்லாதான் தான்காணும் நுட்பம்… நல்லார்கள் கேட்பின் நகை” என்கிறது.
