அறிவற்றங் காக்குங் கருவி செறுவார்க்கும்


உள்ளழிக்க லாகா அரண்.

                                  (குறள் 421: அறிவுடமை அதிகாரம்)

Transliteration:

aRivaRRang kAkkum karuvi seRuvArkkum

uLLazhikka lAgA aRaN

aRiv(u) – wisdom is

aRRam kAkkum – save from destruction

karuvi – an implement or device

seRuvArkkum – even for the enemies

uLL – of inner resolve

azhikkalAgA – unshakeable or indistructible

aRaN – (wisdom is a ) fortress

The first verse of this chapter gives a strong reason for possessing wisdom! Wisdom saves a person from destruction. The destruction mentioned is not the ultimate demise of the body, but the ensuing one that will follow in births to come, when a person has not equipped self with wisdom by learning. Since the soul transcends birth, wisdom will save a person from destruction in all births. Also, it is like an impenetrable fortress to the enenmies that the desires of five senses.

“Wisdom prevents destruction of self; and acts as a fortress

 to inner strength that saves from the distruction and distress.”

தமிழிலே:

அறிவு – ஒருவரின் அறிவுடமை

அற்றங் காக்குங்– அவரை அழிவிலிருந்து காக்கின்ற

கருவி – ஒரு கருவியாகும்

செறுவார்க்கும்
 – உள்ளத்துறுதியைக் குலைக்கும் பகைவர்களான ஐம்புலனாசைகள்

உள்ளழிக்கலாகா – உள்ளத்தை அழிக்க முடியாதபடி காக்கின்ற

அரண் – கோட்டையும் கூட (அறிவுடமைதான்)

இவ்வதிகாரத்தின் முதற்குறளிலேயே அறிவுடமை ஏன் கொள்ளவேண்டுமென்பதற்கான காரணத்தை வலிவுடன் சொல்லித் தொடங்குகிறார் வள்ளுவர். அறிவு ஒருவருக்கு, அவருக்கு அழிவு வராமல் காக்கின்ற கருவி. அழிவு என்பது உடலுக்கான மரணம் என்பதல்ல. ஒருவரின் ஆத்துமா பிறவிகளைக் கடப்பது. அறிவுடமை, எப்பிறப்பிலும் கூட வருவது; தீச்செயல்களிலிருந்து ஒருவரைத் தவிர்த்து இப்பிறப்பிலும், வரும் பிறவிகளிலும் துன்பங்களாகிய அழிவிலிருந்து காப்பதுதான் அறிவுடமை. தவிரவும் உள்ளத்து உறுதியைக் குலைக்கும் ஐம்புலனவாக்களும் உள்ளத்தை வெல்லமுடியாதபடியான உறுதியான கோட்டையுமாகும்.
