மனந்தூய்மை செய்வினை தூய்மை இரண்டும்
இனந்தூய்மை தூவா வரும்.
(குறள் 455: சிற்றினம் சேராமை அதிகாரம்)
Transliteration:
manaththUymai seyvinai thUymai iraNDum
inanthUymai thUvA varum
manath thUymai – The purity of mind
seyvinai thUymai – and the purity of deeds
iraNDum – those two
inan thUymai – depending on a person’s purity of companionship
thUvA varum – will come as the support line.
A simple verse that does not invoke a debate of differences of opinions! Purity of a person’s mind and deeds are dependent on the kind of companionship sought and kept. People that are in the company of mean-minded, though may not be that way to start with, will eventually turn out to be so. Likewise, people that seek the company and guidance of great, will reflect the same in their mind and deeds.

மனந் தூய்மை – அகத்தின் தூய்மையும்
செய்வினை தூய்மை – செயல்களின் தூய்மையும்
இரண்டும் – ஆகிய இரண்டுமே
இனந் தூய்மை – ஒருவர் சேர்ந்திருக்கும் இனத்தின் தூய்மையைப் பொருத்து (சிற்றினம் அல்லது பெரியோர்)
தூவா வரும் – அவருக்குப் பற்றுக்கோடாய் வரும்
இக்குறள் சொல்லும் கருத்து எளிமையானது, கருத்து வேறுபாடுகளுக்கு இடமில்லாதது. ஒருவருடைய மனம் மற்றும் செயல் தூய்மைகள், அவரின் சேர்க்கையையின் துய்மையைப் பொருத்தே அமையும். சிற்றினம் சேர்ந்தார்க்கு மனமும், அதனால் கூடிய செயல்களும் தூய்மையாய் இராது. அதே போல் பெரியோரைப் பற்றுக்கோடாகச் (தூவா) சேர்ந்தார்க்கு, அவரால் நல்வழிப்படுத்தலும், அதனால் மனத்தூய்மையும் உண்டாம். அதன் வழி அவர்கள் செயல்களும் குற்றமின்றி அமையும்.
கம்பராமாயண சடாயு படலத்தில், “ தீயவர் சேர்தல் செய்தார் தூயவர் அல்லர் சொல்லில் தொன்னெறி தொடர்ந்தோர் என்றான்” என்பார் கம்பர்.
