தெளிவி லதனைத் தொடங்கார் இளிவென்னும்
ஏதப்பாடு அஞ்சு பவர்.
(குறள் 464: தெரிந்துசெயல்வகை அதிகாரம்)
Transliteration:
theLiviladhanaith thoDangAr iLivennum
EdhappADu anju bavar
theLiviladhanaith – In deeds whose repurcussions are not clearly understood
thoDangAr – will not begin nor do
iLivennum – understanding the blame and disgrace
EdhappADu – will befall as faults
Anjubavar – those that fear such faults.
Deeds that lack clarity will not be attempted or ventured in to by the people that fear faults that the blame and disgrace such deeds might bring. Inna nARpadhu says the same thing in one of its poems “thERRam ilAdhAn thuNivu innA”. The word thERRamm mean clarity. When the clarity in doing a deed is not there, courage will only bring misery.
vaLLuvar himself has said the same thinig in an earlier chapter (Having Wisdom) that not fearing for things where genuinely being fearful is prudent, is studipidity. Those who know this well will fear such things and apply appropriate caution. After all deed which lack clarity need to be approached with caution only.

தமிழிலே:
தெளிவிலதனைத் – தமக்கு தெளிவாக விளைவு தெரியாத செயல்களைத்
தொடங்கார் – தொடங்கவும் மாட்டார், செய்யவும் மாட்டார்
இளிவென்னும் – அச்செயல்களால் வரும் இழிவும் கேலியுமான
ஏதப்பாடு – குற்றங்களுக்கு ஆளாவோம் என்று
அஞ்சுபவர் – பயப்படுபவர்கள்
தமக்குத் தெளிவாக விளைவுகளைப் பற்றித் தெரியாத செயல்களை, உலகத்தாரால் இழிவென்றும், பழிவருவதென்றும் அஞ்சக்கூடியன என்று குற்றங்களுக்குப் பயப்படுபவர்கள் செய்யமாட்டார்கள். இதையே இன்னா நாற்பது, “தேற்றம் இலாதான் துணிவு இன்னா” (தேற்றம் – தெளிவு) என்கிறது. ஏற்கனவே,
அறிவுடமை அதிகாரத்தில், அஞ்சப்படுவதனை அஞ்சாமை பேதைமையாம்; அவ்வாறு அஞ்சப்படுவதற்கு அஞ்சுதல் அறிந்தோர் தொழில், என்று வள்ளுவரே கூறியிருக்கிறார். அக்குறளின் கருத்தை ஒட்டியதே இக்குறள். தெளிவில்லாத செயல்கள் அஞ்சத்தக்கவைதாமே! (“அஞ்சுவதஞ்சாமை பேதைமை யஞ்சுவதஞ்ச லறிவார் தொழில்”).
இன்றெனது குறள்:
தாழ்வதற்கு அஞ்சுபவர் தான்தெளியா தொன்றினிலும்
மூழ்கி முனைந்திடமாட் டார்.
