ஆற்றின் அளவறிந்து ஈக அதுபொருள்
போற்றி வழங்கு நெறி.
(குறள் 477: வலி அறிதல் அதிகாரம்)
Transliteration:
ARRin aLvaRindhu Iga adhuporuL
pORRi vazhangu neRi.
ARRin – When doing (charity)
aLvaRindhu – know the limits (and capacity)
Iga – to do charity
Adhu – doing so
poruL pORRi – to save the wealth properly
vazhangu neRi – is the proper way to live the life
Already we have seen in the chapter of “Merits of Ruler” through the verse,” IyaRRalum…”, that good governance of a rule is to properly apportion the wealth for the benefit of the country and the citizens. One must divide the wealth and the income into four parts, two of which must be used for expenses and the family maintenance of self; one part is for emergency needs; another one must be used for charitable acts and deeds (“varuvAyuT kAl vazhangi vAzhdhal”). Similar thoughts are expressed in Iniyavai nARpadhu (“varuvAi aRindhu vazhangal inidhE”) and Thirikadugam.

தமிழிலே:
ஆற்றின் – செய்வதானால்
அளவறிந்து – இதுவே சரியான அளவென்று அறிந்து
ஈக – ஈதலையும் செய்ய வேண்டும்
அது – அவ்வாறு செய்வதே
பொருள் போற்றி – இருக்கும் பொருளை காப்பாற்றி முறையாக பங்கீடு செய்து
வழங்கு நெறி – பிறருக்கும் ஈந்து வாழும் நெறி.
ஏற்கனவே இறைமாட்சி அதிகாரத்திலே “இயற்றலும் ஈட்டலும் காத்தலும் காத்த வகுத்தலும் வல்ல தரசு” என்ற குறளை அறிந்திருக்கிறோம். ஒருவன் தன் செல்வத்தை நான்கு பங்குகளாகப் பிரித்து, இரண்டு பங்கினைத் தன்னுடை வாழ்க்கைக் குடும்பச் செலவுகளுக்கும், ஒரு பங்கை எதிர்பாரத அவசரத் தேவைகளுக்காக வைப்பு நிதியாகவும், ஒரு பங்கை பிறருக்கு தானம் செய்வதற்கும் வைத்துக்கொள்ளவேண்டும். இதை “வந்த பொருளின் காற்கூறு வருமேல் இடர்நீக்குதற்கமைந்து, மைந்த விருகானினக் காக்கி மற்றைக் காலே வழங்கிடுக” என்ற பாடல் வரிகள் சொல்லுகின்றன.
இனியவை நாற்பது, “வருவாய் அறிந்து வழங்கல் இனிதே” என்று எளிமையாக ஒரு வரியில் இதைத்தான் சொல்லுகிறது. நல்லதனார் எழுதிய திரிகடுகப்பாடலும், “வருவாயுட் கால்வழங்கி வாழ்தல்” என்று சொல்லும்.
