ஞாலம் கருதினுங் கைகூடுங் காலம்
கருதி இடத்தாற் செயின்.
(குறள் 484: காலமறிதல் அதிகாரம்)
Transliteration:
njAlam karudhinum kaikUDum kAlam
karudhi iDaththAr seyin
njAlam karudhinum – Even if the desire is to bring the whole world under rule
kaikUDum – a ruler may realize that wish, desire (when?)
kAlam karudhi – when the ruler chooses appropriate time to do the deeds
iDaththAr seyin – and the proper place to do the same too and venture.
Even if the desire is to have the whole world, it will be theirs, if appropriate time and place are chosen to do the deeds. Timing is combined with appropriateness of place in this verse, which seems odd, because there are other factors that have been mentioned in an earlier verse. Knowing the appropriate time includes all the factors aforementioned (three talents and four tactics) and the place where the deed is performed.
The next verse to see also uses the same words, “njAlam”, “kAlam”, certainly nice word play, but has the flaw of repeating the same thought.

தமிழிலே:
ஞாலம் கருதினுங் – இவ்வுலகே தம்மாளுகைக்குகீழ் வரவேண்டுமென்று விழைந்தாலும்
கைகூடுங் – அவ்விழைவு நிறைவேறும் (எப்போது?)
காலம் கருதி – செயல்களைச் செய்யுமுன்பு செய்ய தக்க நேரத்தினை ஆய்ந்து முடிவுசெய்து
இடத்தாற் செயின்.- தகுந்த களத்தினையும் தேர்ந்தெடுத்து செய்தால்.
விழைவது உலகே என்றாலும், அதுவும் கிடைக்கப் பெறும், நேரமும், தகுந்த இடமும் தேர்ந்தெடுத்து செய்யும் ஒருவருக்கு என்பது இக்குறள் சொல்லும் கருத்து. காலமறிதல் என்கிற கருத்தோடு, களம் என்பதையும் சேர்த்தே சொல்லுகிற குறள். காலத்தைப் பற்றிச் சொல்லுகிற அதிகாரத்தில் களம் என்பதும் வெற்றிக்குத் தேவை என்று சொல்லுகிறார்.
பொதுவாக காலம் அறியும் போது அதோடு சேர்ந்துள்ள பலவும், களம் உட்பட அடங்கும்; அவை மூவகை ஆற்றல்களும், நால்வகை வழிமுறைகளும், என்று படித்திருக்கிறோம். அடுத்து வரப்போகிற குறளும் காலம், ஞாலம் இவற்றை வைத்தே, இதே கருத்தையே சொல்லுவதாக உள்ளது. மேற்கோளுக்கான அழகான குறளே என்றாலும், சொல்வதையே சொல்லும் வழுவுள்ள குறள்.

காலமிடம் நன்கறிந்து ஆற்றுவோர் வேண்டுவது
ஞாலமே ஆயினும்வாய்க் கும்
