50: (Knowing proper place – இடனறிதல்)

தொடங்கற்க எவ்வினையும் எள்ளற்க முற்றும்
இடங்கண்ட பின்அல் லது.

Transliteration:
thoDangaRka evvinaiyum eLLaRga muRRum
iDangkaNDa pinal ladhu
thoDangaRka – Don’t commence
evvinaiyum – to do any activity
eLLaRga – without knowing the nature of activity, don’t underestimate also
muRRum iDang – meeting place and the ending place of the activity
kaNDapin alladhu – without knowing that
This verse places two thoughts before us. First, before commencing an activity, one must know where and how it will end. Second, not knowing the nature of job, underestimating it. When the opponent is unknown, both must be considered.
The most powerful rulers have lost wars to their enemies, not knowing what their strength; and where they would meet the opponent, how long it would take, what the end game and place of the war would be.
A ruler, having a huge army like an ocean must not underestimate the opponet, just because of that. This has been captured in a beautiful poetry in puralpporuL venpA mAlai.
Never begin anything underestimating an opponent
And not knowing where, and how the end will be met

தொடங்கற்க – செய்யத் தொடங்காதீர்
எவ்வினையும் – எச்செயலையும்
எள்ளற்க – செயலின் தன்மையையும் தெரியாமல் இகழலும் செய்யாதீர்
முற்றும் இடங்– அச்செயலினைச் சந்திக்கும், முற்றுகின்ற
கண்டபின் அல்லது – அறிந்தபின்அல்லாமல்
இக்குறளில் இரண்டு கருத்துக்கள் கூறப்படுகின்றன. முதலாவது, ஒரு செயலைத் தொடங்குவதற்கு முன்பு, அச்செயலை எவ்விடத்தில் எப்படி முடிவுறும் என்று அறிந்துகொள்ளாமல் செல்வது; இரண்டாவது அச்செயலின் தன்மையறியாது, அதை துச்சமாக எண்ணி எள்ளுதல்.
உலகின் மிகப்பெரிய வலிமைமிக்க அரசர்கள் நிகழ்த்திய போர்களெல்லாம் எதிரிகளின் வலிமையையும், போர் நிகழும் களம், மற்றும் முடிவுறும் இலக்கும் இவை அறியாமல் மேற்கொண்டதால் படுதோல்வியைச் சந்தித்திருக்கின்றன. புறப்பொருள் வெண்பாமாலைப் பாடலொன்று:
வெள்ளம்போல் தானை வியந்து விரவாரை
எள்ளி உணர்தல் இயல்பன்று – தெள்ளியார்
ஆறுமேல் ஆறியபின் அன்றித்தம் கைக்கொள்ளார்
நீறுமேல் பூத்த நெருப்பு.
கடல் போல் பெரிய படையை உடையேம் என்று எண்ணிப் பகைவரை இகழ்தல் நல்ல இயல்பன்று. அறிவு மிக்கோர் நீறுபூத்த நெருப்பை அது ஆறிவிட்டது என உறுதிசெய்த பின்பே கையில் எடுப்பர். தம் வலிமையொன்றையே பெரிதெனக் கருதாது பிறர் வலிமையையும் ஆராய்ந்து செயல்பட வேண்டும்; அப்போதுதான் வெற்றி கிட்டும் என்பது இதன் கருத்து. இடம்பற்றிய கருத்து இதுவல்லவென்றாலும், எள்ளுதலை தவறென்று உணர்த்தும் பாடலிது.
இன்றெனது குறள்:
எச்செயலும் எள்ளலும் ஏற்றவிடம் எண்ணாமல்
அச்செயலில் செல்லலும்நன் றன்று
echcheyalum eLLAlum ERRaviDam eNNAmal
achcheyalil chellalumnan RanRu
