கடலோடா கால்வல் நெடுந்தேர் கடலோடும்
நாவாயும் ஓடா நிலத்து.
(குறள் 496: இடனறிதல் அதிகாரம்)
Transliteration:
kaDalODA kaLval neDunthEr kaDalODum
nAvAyum ODA nilaththu
kaDalODA – won’t go on sea
kaLval – strong wheeled
neDunthEr – tall chariot
kaDalODum – That which run on deep sea waters
nAvAyum – the big ship
ODA nilaththu – will not run on ground.
To win against enemies, one must know where the enemies will operate. Even if it is a big ship, but for the deep sea waters, will not travel on the ground; similarly, even it is capable of carrying mighty warriors, a strong wheeled big chariot cannot run on deep sea waters.
The snake around the neck of Lord Shiva is always safe. Even Garuda (an enemy if snake, mythical bird like eagle, Vishnu’s vehicle) cannot fight that snake. Likewise for everyone, safety is only in suitable grounds for operation. Victory or Loss is immaterial. This verse just gives metaphorical references of ship and chariot to drive home the point.
“A ship does not run even on the roads paved
On deep sea a ship, can not be an inch moved”
தமிழிலே:
கடலோடா – கடல்மேலே செல்லாது
கால்வல் – வலிய சக்கரத்தை உடைய
நெடுந்தேர் – உயர்ந்திருக்கும் தேரானது
கடலோடும் – கடல் மேலே செல்லுகிற
நாவாயும் – கப்பலும்
ஓடா நிலத்து – நிலத்தின் மேலே ஓடாது
யார் எங்கு செயல்பாடுவார்கள் என்று இடம் அறிந்து செயலாற்றுதலே பகைவர்களை வெல்லக்கூடிய வழியாகும். பெருங்கப்பலேயானாலும் அது ஆழ்கடலன்றி நிலத்தின்மேல் பயணிக்காது. அதேபோல எவ்வளவுதான் சிறந்த வீரர்களைசு சுமந்து செல்லுவதானாலும் பெரியதேர் கடல் மேலே செல்லாது.
பரமசிவன் கழுத்திலிருக்கும் பாம்பு எப்போதுமே பாதுகாப்பாகத்தான் இருக்கும். கருடனும் கூட அதோடு சண்டைக்குப் போகமுடியாது. யாருமே அவருக்கு ஏற்ற களத்தில் இருந்தால், செயலாற்றினால்தான் பாதுகாப்பு! வெற்றி தோல்வியெல்லாம் பிறகுதான். எவ்விடத்தில் எச்செயலைச் செய்தால் அது கூடாதோ அவ்விடத்தில் அதைச் செய்யக்கூடாது என்பதைச் சொல்ல உவமையை மட்டும் சொல்லி அமைந்த குறள்.

கூடா விடச்செயல் போல்
