ஒற்றொற்றித் தந்த பொருளையும் மற்றுமோர்
ஒற்றினால் ஒற்றிக் கொளல்.
(குறள் 588: ஒற்றாடல் அதிகாரம்)
ஒற்று – ஒற்றரொருவர்
ஒற்றித் தந்த – உளவறிந்து சேகரித்துத் தந்த தகவல்களை
பொருளையும் – அவற்றின் பின்னணிப் பொருளதனை
மற்றுமோர் – மற்றுமோர்
ஒற்றினால் – ஒற்றரைக் கொண்டு
ஒற்றிக் – அதே பொருள் பற்றி ஒற்றரியச் செய்து,
கொளல் – இரண்டையும் ஒப்பு நோக்கியே உண்மை பின்புலத்தை அறிய வேண்டும்
முன்பே சொல்லப்பட்ட பொருள் என்றாலும், இக்குறள் ஒற்றாடலின் ஒரு இன்றியமையாத பொருளைச் சொல்கிறது. சொல்லப்படும் தகவலின் நம்பகத்தன்மையை அறிய ஒரே பொருள் பற்றி இரு வேறு ஒற்றர்களை ஒருவருக்கொருவர் அறிந்துகொள்ளாமல் ஒற்றச் செய்வது ஆள்வோருக்கு நன்மை பயப்பதாகும். பொதுவாகச் செய்யும் செயல்களுக்கு இவை தேவையில்லை எனினும், நாட்டின், குடிகளின், ஆள்வோரின் பாதுகாப்பு போன்றவற்றையும், நாட்டு மக்களின் சிந்தனை ஓட்டத்தையும் அறிந்து கொள்ள ஆள்வோருக்கு மிகவும் தேவையான ஒன்றாகும்.
இலக்கிய மேற்கோள்கள் பெருங்கதையிலும், சீவக சிந்தாமணியிலும் காட்டப்படுகின்றன. “ ஒற்று ஒற்றியவரை ஒற்றின் ஆய்ந்தும்”, “ஒற்று மாக்களின் ஒற்றரிந் ஆயா” என்ற வரிகளை பெருங்கதையில் (3.23:53,25.48) காணலாம். “ஒற்றர்தங்களை ஒற்றரின் ஆய்தலும் கொற்றங் கொள்குறிக் கொற்றவர்க் கென்பவே” என்ற வரிகளை சீவக சிந்தாமணியிலும் காணலாம் (சீவக 1921).
Transliteration:
oRRoRRi thanda poruLAiyum maRRumOr
oRRinAl oRRik koLal
oRR(u) – A spy
oRRi thanda – whatever information he collects and gives through spying
poruLAiyum – the underlying content and what it means to a rule
maRRumOr – with another spy
oRRinAl – with another spy
oRRik – spying on the same and verifying the two individual and independent sources
koLal – then mus be taken into consideration.
The thought of this verse is already a known one, nevertheless an important one to be said explicitly through another verse. Whatever information collected using a spy on important security matters, things pertinent to the state, citizens and its enemies, must be verified with another spy independently to be sure of the veracity and believability of the same. Sometimes, it is required to feel the pulse of the citizens too.
