குறளின் குரல் – 605

உள்ளம் இலாதவர் எய்தார் உலகத்து 
வள்ளியம் என்னுஞ் செருக்கு.
                          (குறள் 598: ஊக்கமுடைமை அதிகாரம்)

உள்ளம் – ஊக்கம் என்பது
இலாதவர் – இல்லாதவர்கள்
எய்தார் – அடைய மாட்டார்கள்
உலகத்து – இவ்வுலகத்த்திலே
வள்ளியம் என்னுஞ் – வள்ளன்மைதரும்
செருக்கு – களிப்பு (தருக்கு இல்லை)

ஊக்கமின்றி ஆக்கம் (செல்வம்) இல்லை; செல்வமின்றி கொடையும் இல்லை; பிறர்க்குக் கொடுப்பதே உண்மையான களிப்பைத் தருவதாகும். அக்களிப்பையே வள்ளுவர் இக்குறளில் செருக்கு என்று குறிப்பிடுகிறார். ஊக்கம் இல்லாதவர்கள் இவ்வுலகத்திலே வள்ளன்மையால் வரும் உண்மையான களிப்பை அடையமாட்டார்கள் என்பதே இக்குறள் சொல்லும் கருத்து. ஊக்கமில்லாதவர்கள் அடையமுடியாததென்று “மகிழ்ச்சியைக்” குறிப்பிட்டு, அதை விரும்பாமல் யாரும் இருக்கமாட்டார்கள் ஆகையால், ஊக்கமுடைமைக்கான காரணத்தை எதிர் விளைவைச் சொல்லியும் நிறுவுகிறார் வள்ளுவர்.

Transliteration:

uLLam ilAdavar eidAr ulagaththu
vaLLiyam ennum serukku

uLLam – Zeal
ilAdavar – that who does not have (zeal)
eidAr – will not attain
ulagaththu – in this world
vaLLiyam ennum – being benevolent 
serukku – the happiness derived out of it

Without “zeal” there is no wealth; without wealth there is no benevolence; to be benevolent towards others is truly pleasurable and defines happiness. vaLLuvar calls that pleasure and happiness as “serukku” in this verse. Those who are not zealous will never understand the happiness that is derived out of being benevolent to others. Instead vaLLuvar establishes an indirect link to happiness by being zealous and categorically says, for unenergetic, there will not be any reason to be happy. After all who would not want true happiness?

Apathetic will never see in their lives, the presence 
Of happiness derived out of the act of benevolence
