61: (Devoid of Sloth or inaction – மடியின்மை)
[It is important to have vigor, zeal; it is even more important to be devoid of laziness and being a sloth. Zeal to do things may be there in many, but when it comes to action sometimes, we see the sloppiness and inaction due to laziness or being lethargic. Hence vaLLuvar talks about not being a sloth right after the chapter on vigor or zeal. Interest and zeal to accomplish are good, but those alone will not give results; only pursuing the undertaken deeds without being sluggish sloppiness will achieve results.]

குடியென்னும் குன்றா விளக்கம் மடியென்னும்
மாசூர மாய்ந்து கெடும்.
(குறள் 601: மடியின்மை அதிகாரம்)
குடியென்னும் – ஒருவர் தாம் பிறந்த குடியென்னும்
குன்றா – அணையாத, வாடாத
விளக்கம் – சோதி விளக்கு
மடியென்னும் – சோம்பலென்னும்
மாசு ஊர – தூசு மேலே படியப் படிய
மாய்ந்து கெடும் – இறந்து அணையும்.
ஒருவரின் குடிப்பெருமையாகிய அணையா விளக்கானது, சோம்பலுடைமை என்னும் மாசு படியப் படிய அணைந்து இருள் சூழ்ந்து விடும் என்று பிறந்த குடும்பத்தின் பெருமையை முன்னிறுத்தி இவ்வதிகாரத்தின் முதற்குறளாகக் கூறுகிறார். “மாசு ஊர” என்றதனால், சோம்பலானது பெருகப் பெருக, சிறுகச் சிறுக பெருமை அழிந்துவிடும்.
Transliteration:
kuDiyennum kunRA viLakkam maDiyennum
mAsUra mAindu viDum
kuDiyennum – For a person, the pride of the family
kunRA – never fading
viLakkam – shining lamp
maDiyennum – because of lethargy, sloth
mAs(u) Ura – that is like dust which covers slowly but completely
mAindu viDum – will die and shut (to bring darkness)
The pride of family is like a lamp that should never die. The dust of lethargy, laziness as it grows on a person slowly, but steadily, will shut the light of pride eventually and the darkness shame will engulf, In this first verse of being devoid of laziness, vaLLuvar puts the family in the fore to establish the need to get rid of sloppy, sluggish and lethargic ways. The fact that shade of dust setting in slowly on family pride is implied by the usage “mAsu Ura” in vaLLuvar’s verse.
“The never fading light of pride on a family will surely
shutdown as the dust of sloth, laziness engulfs slowly”
