மடியை மடியா ஒழுகல் குடியைக்
குடியாக வேண்டு பவர்.
(குறள் 602: மடியின்மை அதிகாரம்)
மடியை – சோம்பியிருத்தலை
மடியா – சோம்பலாகக் கருதி (பரிமேலழகர் உரை). மடிய (இறந்து) என்பது பொருத்தமாக இருக்கும்
ஒழுகல் – வாழ்கின்றவர்
குடியைக் – தம்முடைய குடியானது
குடியாக – மேலும் ஓங்கி உயர
வேண்டுபவர் – விழைகின்றவர்
மீண்டுமொரு அலங்காரத்துக்காக மட்டும் எழுதப்பட்ட குறள். மடியா என்ற சொல்லுக்கு பரிமேலழகர் உரை சொல்லுகையில், சோம்பலை சோம்பலாகப் பார்க்கவேண்டுமென்று கூறுகிறார். அதற்கு விளக்கமாக, “நெருப்பை நெருப்பாகப் பார்ப்பதுபோல்” என்கிறார். இது பொருந்தவில்லை. சோம்பலைச் சோம்பலாகப் பாராமல், சுகமாக யார் பார்ப்பார்கள்?
இயக்கமின்மையாக, தவமாக பார்ப்பவர்கள் இயங்காதவர்களே! ஓசை நயத்துக்காக மடியா, குடியா என்று சொல்லியிருந்தாலாவது ஒப்புக்கொள்ளலாம். அவ்வாறும் இல்லாது, மடியா, குடியாக என்றதனால், மடிய என்று சொன்னது மடியா என்று படிவம் எடுக்கப்பட்டதாகவே கொள்ளலாம்.
மடிய என்று இருப்பின், குறள் இவ்வாறு பொருளாகும். சோம்பியிருத்தலை இறக்கச் செய்து வாழ்பவர்கள் தம் குடியை, குடிப்பெருமையை மென்மேலும் உயர்த்துபவர்கள். குடி உயருமோ இல்லையோ, சோம்பியிருப்பதைத் தவிர்ப்பது குடிவாழ உதவும் என்பதே மெய்.
Transliteration:
maDiyai maDiyA ozhugal kuDiyai
kuDiyAga vENDu bavar
maDiyai – being lazy
maDiyA – considered laziness (says Parimelazhagar)! maDiya (to be dead) is more appropriate
ozhugal – to live as such
kuDiyai – the family
kuDiyAga – to grow in stature further
vENDubavar – desirous of that
Another verse as a mere decoration to this chapter! Parimelazhagar interpretes “maDiyA” as seeing laziness “as such”! He cites another example of seeing fire as fire. This may be said for people that construe on object or action as another because of the fault in their sight; Or perhaps because people would construe, such laziness as penitence or being quiet. But it does not fit.
It does not sound correct even assuming the word usages is to maintain the rhyme with kuDiyA!. The word is kuDiyAga there. It is entirely possible the word “maDiya” became extended while transcribing from the palm leaves and hence the interpretation.
The verse should indeed mean, those that will see their laziness die will definitely see their family prosperity high.
“Let sloppiness of laziness die
Familys’ stature will soar high”
