குடிமடிந்து குற்றம் பெருகும் மடிமடிந்து
மாண்ட உஞற்றி லவர்க்கு.
(குறள் 604: மடியின்மை அதிகாரம்)
குடிமடிந்து – அவர்தம் குடியும் (குடிமக்களும், ஆள்வோர்க்கெனில்)
குற்றம் பெருகும் – குற்றங்களும் பெருகிவிடும்
மடி மடிந்து – சோம்பலில் வீழ்ந்துபட்டு
மாண்ட – முற்றிலும் தீர்ந்த (எல்லா வழிகளிலும் முயன்று பார்க்கும்)
உஞற்று இலவர்க்கு – முயற்சியும் இல்லாதவர்க்கு
சோம்பலுக்காட்பட்டு, அதிலேயே வீழ்ந்து, முற்றிலுமாக முயன்று பார்க்கும் முயற்சியும் இல்லாதவர்க்கு, அவருடைய குடியும் (குடிமக்களும்) அழிந்து, குற்றங்களும் பெருகிவிடும் என்று இக்குறள் சோம்பலின் தீமையைக் கூறுகிறது. தனி மனிதனின் சோம்பலினால் அவனுக்கும், அவனைச் சார்ந்தவர்களுக்கும்தாம் அழிவு. அதுவே ஒரு ஆட்சியாளனுக்கு இருக்குமாயின் அவனுடைய குடிமக்களும் முற்றிலும் அழிந்துபடுவர். வள்ளுவர் பயன்படுத்தியுள்ள “உஞற்று” என்ற சொல்லைப் புரிந்துகொள்ளவே முயலவேண்டுமே! முயற்சி என்றே சொல்லியிருக்கலாம்!
Transliteration:
kuDimAdindu kuRRam perugum maDimaDindu
mANDa unjaRRi lavarkku
kuDimAdindu – their family (or citizens for rulers)
kuRRam perugum – the crimes will multiply and increase
maDi maDindu – fallen because laziness (being sloth)
mANDa – exhaustively trying
unjaRR(u) ilavarkku – without having such effort
Being slothful, subject to laziness, if someone loses completely even the effort to be rid of that sluggishness, then the person will perish, and crimes will multiply, says this verse to highlight the evil and harm of slothfulness. The sluggishness of an individual will only ruin the person and his family; but a rulers’ sloppiness will ruin his citizens and will increase the evil and ensuing harm in the society at large.

People live under perish; evil and harm are aftermath”
