வெள்ளத் தனைய இடும்பை அறிவுடையான்
உள்ளத்தின் உள்ளக் கெடும்.

வெள்ளத்தனைய – பெருகி வரும் வெள்ளம்போல
இடும்பை – மிகுதியான துன்பமும்
அறிவுடையான் – அறிவுமிக்கோர்
உள்ளத்தின் – தங்கள் மனத்திலே கொண்டுள்ள
உள்ளக் – ஊக்கமிகு எண்ணத்தினால்
கெடும் – இல்லாது ஒழியும்
பெருகிவரும் வெள்ளம்போல் பேரழிவை ஒத்த துன்பம் வரினும், அறிவுடையோர், தங்கள் மனத்திலே கொண்ட ஊக்கத்தினாலேயே அதைத் துன்பமாகக் கருதாது வினையாற்றும். “வெள்ளத்தனைய மலர் நீட்டம்” என்ற குறளில் நீரின் அளவு என்பதற்கு பயன்படுத்தப்பட்ட சொல், இங்கு பேரழிவை தரக்கூடிய என்னும் பொருளில் வருவது கவனிக்கத்தக்கது. இரண்டு குறள்களிலும் “உள்ளம்” என்பதற்கு “ஊக்கம்” என்ற பொருளிலேயே செய்யப்பட்டிருக்கிறது.
Transiliteration:
veLLath thanaiya iDumbai aRivuDaiyAn
uLLaththin uLLak keDum
veLLaththanaiya – even flood like excessive
iDumbai – miseries
aRivuDaiyAn – wisemen
uLLaththin – in their mind
uLLak – with the resolve they have
keDum – will vanish
Though a flood of hardship or miseries come in, wisemen, because of the resolute nature and the natural zeal in them, will not consider them as havoc causing. Typically they take them as experiences and move on. The word “veLLaththaniya” was used to show the water level in a pond in an earlier verse “veLLaththanaiya malar nITTam”. Here the same is used to imply floods. However the word “uLLam” has been used in the context of “zeal” in both
“Even the excessive flood of miseries will perish
When wisemen with mind of steal and zeal wish”
