மடுத்தவா யெல்லாம் பகடன்னான் உற்ற
இடுக்கண் இடர்ப்பாடு உடைத்து.

மடுத்த வாயெல்லாம் – பள்ளங்கள் நிறைந்த பாதைகளில் (மடு – பள்ளம்)
பகடன்னான் – வண்டியிழுக்கும் காளைபோல்வர் (மெய்வருத்தம் பாராது)
உற்ற இடுக்கண் – துன்பம் உற்று
இடர்ப்பாடு – அதனால் வரும் இடையூறுகளை
உடைத்து – ஊடு சென்று அவற்றை முறியடித்து
மேடு பள்ளங்கள் நிறைந்த பாதையாயினும், சுமை நிறைந்த வண்டிப்பாரத்தைச் சுமந்துகொண்டு இழுப்பது கடினமாயினும், எருதானது மெய்சோராது அவ்வண்டியை இழுக்கும். அக்காளையின் உறுதியைக் கொண்டவர்கள் துன்பம் தரும் இடர்பாடுகள் நிறைந்த பாதையிலும் ஊடுருவிச் சென்று, அவற்றை உடைத்து செயலாற்றும் திறம் மிக்கவர்.
இக்குறளால் துன்பங்களைத் தரும் இடையூறுகளை உடைத்துச் செல்லும் திண்மை உணர்த்தப்படுகிறது.
எருது இழுக்கும் வண்டிப்பாரத்தை வாழ்க்கைச் சுமைக்கு ஒப்பாய் சொன்னது, சங்கப்பாடல்கள் தொட்டு, இன்றுவரை தொடர்வது. கி.வா.ஜ அவர்களின் ஆராய்ச்சிப் பதிப்பில் இப்பாடலுக்கான உரையிடலில் அவை சுட்டப்பட்டு இருக்கின்றன. அவற்றுள் சில:
“அள்ளல் தங்கிய பகடுறு விழுமம், கள்ளார் களமர் பெயர்க்கும்ஆர்ப்பே” (மதுரை.259-60)
“கானற் கழியுப்பு முகந்து கல்நாடு மடுக்கும், ஆரைச் சாகாட்டாழ்ச்சி போக்கும், உரனுடை நோன்பகட்டன்ன, எங்கோன்” (புறநானூறு: 60: 7-9)
“அச்சொடு தாக்கிப் பாருற் றியங்கிய பண்டச் சாகாட் டாழ்ச்சி சொலிய
அரிமணன் ஞெமரக் கற்பக நடக்கும் பெருமிதப் பகட்டுக்குத் துறையு முண்டோ” (புறநானூறு: 90: 6-9)
Transliteration:
maDuththavA yellAm pagaDannAn uRRa
idUkkaN iDarppADu uDaiththu
maDuththa vAyellAm – On the road filled with pot holes
pagaDannAn – a person like a bull that pulls a cart filled with load
uRRa idUkkaN – hardship or miseries that they have
iDarppADu – the obstacles created by such hardship
uDaiththu – will break (the person not mindful of burdensome work)
Even though path is filled with a lot of potholes, a bull, not minding the burden and pain to the body, still is on its path to destination. People of that are as resolved will break through the obstacles created by any hardship and the miseries caused by them.
This verse emphasizes the resoluteness to face the hardships and the obstacles. The example of bull pulling load through the road filled with potholes is mentioned in many literary works to persevere through hardship.
“People of resolve are like a bull pulling the load
Not minding the burden, on potholes filled road”
