வினையான் வினையாக்கிக் கோடல் நனைகவுள்
யானையால் யானையாத் தற்று.
(குறள் 678: வினைசெயல்வகை அதிகாரம்)
வினையான் – செய்கின்ற ஒரு செயலைக் கொண்டே
வினையாக்கிக் – பிற செயல்களையும் நிறைவேற்றிக்
கோடல் – செய்து கொள்ளல்
நனைகவுள் – மத நீர் ஒழுகும் கன்னங்களை உடைய (வெறியூட்டப்பட்ட)
யானையால் – ஒரு யானையைக் கொண்டு
யானை – மற்றொரு யானையைப்
யாத்தற்று – பிணைப்பது போன்றது
செய்யும் ஒரு செயலைக் கொண்டே மற்ற பிற செயல்களையும் செய்து முடித்துக்கொள்வது என்பது மதநீர் ஒழுகும் ஒரு யானையைக் கொண்டு (கும்கி என்று அறியப்படும்) மற்றொரு யானையைப் பிடிப்பது போலாகும். பெரிய ஆதாயத்துக்காகச் சொல்லப்பட்டாலும், சிறு மீனைப் போட்டு பெரிய மீனைப் பிடிப்பதும் இதுபோலதான். ஒன்றைச் செய்யும் போதே, அதனால் வரும் பயன் அல்லது ஒத்த எண்ணங்களைக் கொண்டு மற்ற செயல்களைச் சாதிப்பது செயல் திறனாகும்.
மதநீர் ஒழுகும் யானை என்றது கூடல் வேட்கை ஊட்டப்பட்ட யானையைக் குறிப்பது. இதே போன்று ஒரு செயலின் வேகத்தில், சாதிக்கவேண்டும் என்கிற வேட்கையைக் கொண்டே பிறசெயல்களை செய்து முடித்துக்கொள்வது அமைச்சர்கள் கொள்ளவேண்டிய செயல் திறனும் வகையுமாகும்.
பழமொழி நானூற்றுப் பாடலொன்று இதே ஈற்றடியை வைத்துப் பாடல் செய்திருப்பதால், “யானையால் யானையாத் தற்று” என்பது ஒரு நன்கு அறியப்பட்ட பழமொழியாகவும், யானையைக் கொண்டு யானையைப் பிடிக்கும் பழக்கமும் நெடுங்கால பழக்கம் என்று தெரியவருகிறது. அப்பாடலானது:
ஆணம் உடைய அறிவினார் தம்நலம்
மாணும் அறிவி னவரைத் தலைப்படுத்தல்
மான்அமர் கண்ணாய்! மறம்கெழு மாமன்னர்
யானையால் யானையாத் தற்று.
Transliteration:
vinaiyAn – By doing one task as impetus or as a seed
vinaiyAkkik – getting other tasks also done
kODal – and accomplished
nanaikavuL – secreting with the fluid while its upset or sexual drive
yAnaiyAl – using such an elephant
yAnai – how another elephant
yAththaRRu – they capture.
By doing one task, getting others done is like capturing one elephant with another elephant trained (kumki elephant) for the job. The enthusiasam and the momentum built while doing one task must be capitalized to accomplish as much as possible. This is what is iimplied in this verse. Capturing big fish using a small fish is a general expression we hear. Though it is meant for profit making, the underlying principle is the same.
The qualifying phrase of “nanaikavuL” in this verse may seem unnecessary. It implies the fluid secretion through the trunk of the elephant because of its sexual drive to attract an elephant. It is perhaps added to imply the enthusiastic drive of involved persons to get more things done – such should be the administrative, executive capacity of a minister to get work done efficiently.
There is poem in Pazhamozhi nAnURu, that uses the same last line. So, it is apparent the adage “yAnaiyAl yAnaiyAth thaRRu” has been in use even during the times of vaLLuvar and also the practice of capturing elephants using an elephant trained for it.
“Doing more work with a work undertaken is being more efficient
Like using an elephant to capture another one by enchantment”
