அறிவுரு வாராய்ந்த கல்விஇம் மூன்றன்
செறிவுடையான் செல்க வினைக்கு.
(குறள் 684: தூது அதிகாரம்)
அறிவு – இயல்பான அறிவுக்கூர்மை
உருவு – பொலிவான தோற்றம்
ஆராய்ந்த கல்வி – நல்லவை, கெட்டவை இவற்றை கண்டறியும் அறிவு
இம்மூன்றன் – என இம்மூன்றின்
செறிவுடையான் – சரியளவு விகிதத்தில் அமையப்பெற்றவன்
செல்க – செல்லவேண்டும்
வினைக்கு – தூதாகிய செயலுக்கு
இக்குறளில் இரண்டு குறள்களுக்கு முன்பு சொல்லப்பட்ட அன்பு, அறிவு, ஆராய்ந்த சொல்வன்மை என்றவற்றுள் அன்பு என்பதை நீக்கிவிட்டு, அதற்குப் பதிலாகப் “பகைவரும் கண்டு வியக்கும், விரும்பும் தோற்றத்தில் பொலிவோடு” என்று பொருள்படும்படி “உருவு” என்று சொல்லியிருக்கிறார்! ஆராய்ந்த சொல்வன்மைக்குப் பதிலாக, ஆராய்ந்த கல்வி என்று சொல்லியிருக்கிறார். ஆராய்ந்த கல்வியிலார்க்கு ஆராய்ந்த சொல்வன்மை எப்படியிருக்கும்? குறளின் அளவுக்காக மும்முன்றாகச் சொல்லியிருப்பாரோ? என்று சிந்திக்க வேண்டியுள்ளது. இல்லையெனில் இக்குறளும் ஓர் அதிகார நிரப்பியே.
பகைவரும் கண்டு வியக்கும் தோற்றப்பொலிவுடையவர்களாக அனுமனும், கிருட்டினனும் இருந்ததை இதிகாசங்கள் பலவிடங்களில் சொல்லுகின்றன. சொன்னதையே சொன்ன வழுவை தள்ளிவிட்டுப் பார்த்தால், இக்குறள், “அறிவுக் கூர்மை, விரும்பத்தக்கத் தோற்றப்பொலிவு, தேர்ந்த கல்வியறிவு” ஆகிய மூன்றும் உற்ற விகிதங்களில் அமையப்பெற்றவரே தூதராகச் செல்லவேண்டும் என்பதே இக்குறள் சொல்லும் கருத்து.
Transliteration:
aRivuru vArAinda kalviim mUnRan
seRivuDaiyAn selga vinaikku.
aRivu – natural intellect
urruvu – attractive and respectable looks
ArAinda kalvi – deep knowledge attained through education
Im mUnRan – of these three
seRivuDaiyAn – mix of right proportion (of the three)
selga – shall go to
vinaikku – do the work of emissary.
This verse is almost of a repeat of what is said two verses ago. Except compassionate love for people, other two – sharp intellect and thoughtful articulation – are implied in this verse too. Sharp intellect is mentioned as it is. Thoughtful articulation is the result of deep study and knowledge acquired, which is what is mentioned in this verse. How could there be thoughtful articulation without knowledge gained through deep study?
The new factor added here is “form of respectable and attractive looks”. Seems like vaLLuvar has said three traits at a time considering the constraint of the measure of the verse. If not, this is another chapter filler verse only. Interestingly, the emissaries of epics Hanuman and Krishna both had wonderful forms and respectable looks.
Ignoring the repetition of the words, the verse says: A person with intellect, knowledge acquired with deep study, and respectable looks must go as an emissary always.
“Erudition of ethics, sharp intellect, loveable look
Person of these three shall go for emissary work”
