செவிச்சொல்லும் சேர்ந்த நகையும் அவித்தொழுகல்

செவிச்சொல்லும் – மற்றவர் காதுகளில் இரகசியமாய் பேசுவதும்
சேர்ந்த நகையும் – ஒருவரோடு ஒருவர் பார்த்து சிரித்துக்கொள்ளலும்
அவித்தொழுகல் – இவற்றைச் செய்யாமல் மாண்புற ஒழுகவேண்டும்
ஆன்ற – மாட்சிமை பொருந்திய
பெரியார் அகத்து – மன்னர்க்கு முன்பாக இருக்கும்போது
பொதுவாக ஒரு குழுவிலே வேலை செய்யும்போது, தனியாக இருவர் ஒருவர் காதில் இரகசியமாகப் பேசிக்கொள்வதும், ஓரக்கண்ணால் பார்த்து சிரித்துக்கொள்ளுவதும், குழுவாக வேலை செய்யும் ஒழுங்குக்கு ஏற்புடையதல்ல. ஒருவர் மாட்சிமை பொருந்திய மன்னர் முன்பாக இருக்கும்போது, அவர் காணும்படியாக மற்றவரோடு செவியில் இரகசியமாக ஓதுவதும், சிரித்துக்கொள்வதும் மன்னவர்க்கு ஐயத்தையும், அதுவே முற்றி கோபத்தையும் தந்துவிடும். அதனால் அவற்றைச் செய்யாமல் தவிர்க்க வேண்டும்.
இக்கருத்தை சிறுபஞ்சமூலப்பாடல் இவ்வாறு சொல்லுகிறது.
நகையொது மந்திரம் நட்டார்க்கு வாரம்
பகையொடு பாட்டுரையென் றைந்துந்- தொகையொடு
மூத்தோ ரிருந்துழி வேண்டார் முதுநூலுள்
யாத்தா ரறிந்தவ ராய்ந்து.
ஒருவரைப் பார்த்து ஒருவர் சிரித்துக்கொள்ளலும், ஒருவனோடு செவிச்சொல்லும், தம் நட்புக்காகவும் , சுற்றத்துக்காகவும் பரிந்து பேசுதலும், பகையாடுதலும், கற்றறிந்த பெரியோர் முன்னிலையில் தான் ஒரு பாட்டுக்குப் பொருள் சொல்லுதலும் ஆகிய இவ்வைந்தும் விலக்கத்தக்கன என்று பழைய நூல்களிலே அறிவுடையார் ஆராய்ந்து சொல்லியிருகின்றன்ர்.
Transliteration:
Sevichchollum sErndha nagaiyum aviththozhugal
AnRa periyA ragaththu
Sevichchollum – To speak secretly in somebody’s ears
sErndha nagaiyum – or to be laughing secretly among themselves
aviththozhugal – must be avoided in their conduct
AnRa – the sovereign
periyAr agaththu – kings presence (in)
When working in a company of people, it is against the decorum, to be speaking secretively or even smiling between for any two persons, and must be definitely avoided. This is even more serious in the presenece of sovereignty and will most definitely render in trouble and invokes the ruler’s wrath against them.
The same thought is conveyed by a poem in “sirupancha mUlam” as part of five deeds to be avoided. They are speaking secretively, smiling at each other while others are looking at, to speak on behalf of friends and relatives, going against with enemity, attempting to discourse and explain a poem before the learned (unasked).
“To speak and smile secretively between any two
in the presence of sovereignty, are avoidable two!”
