இளையர் இனமுறையர் என்றிகழார் நின்ற
ஒளியோடு ஒழுகப் படும்.
(குறள் 698: மன்னரைச் சேர்ந்தொழுகல் அதிகாரம்)
இளையர் – இவர் எம்மைவிட வயதில் சிறியவர்தாமே,
இன முறையர் – எம்முடைய உறவு முறையிலிருப்பவர் தாமே,
என்றிகழார் – என்றும் ஆள்வோனை தம்மிலும் தாழ்வாகவும், சமமாகவும் எண்ணி
நின்ற – அவனுக்கு உரிய
ஒளியோடு – புகழை, மேன்மையைக் கருதியே
ஒழுகப்படும் – அவரோடு பழகப்படவேண்டும்
ஆள்வோரை தம்மில் வயதில் சிறியவர்தாமே என்றும், தமக்கு உறவு முறையில் இருப்பவர்தாமே என்றும் தம்மிலும் தாழ்ந்த, அல்லது சமநிலையில் வைத்து நோக்காது, அவருடைய பதவிக்கு உரிய மதிப்பையும், புகழையும், மேன்மையையும் கருதியே அவரோடு ஒழுக வேண்டும் என்கிறது இக்குறள்.
உருவுகண்டு எள்ளாமை வேண்டும் என்பதை இக்குறளுக்கும் பொருத்திப் பார்க்கலாம். இவன் வெல்லத்தக்க இளைஞனே என்று வெற்றுரை கூறும் வேந்தரை வென்றழிப்பேன் என்ற பாண்டியன் நெடுஞ்செழினது சூளுரைக்கும் போர் முரசப் புறநானூற்றுப் பாடலொன்று, “நகுதக் கனரே நாடுமீக் கூறுநர் இளையன் இவனென வுளையக் கூறி” என்னும் வரிகளைக் கொண்டது. இளையர் என்று நினைக்கக்கூடாதென்பதைக் கூறும் பல பாடல்களில், இவ்வதிகாரத்தின் முதற்குறளுக்கே மேற்கோளாகச் சொல்லப்பட்ட ஆசாரக்கோவை பாடல் மீண்டும் கவனிக்கத்தக்கது.
“அளையுறை பாம்பும் அரசும் நெருப்பும் முழையுறை சீயமும் என்றிவை நான்கும்
இளைய வெளிய பயின்றெனவென் றெண்ணி இகழின் இழுக்கம் தரும்”
கடுகு சிறுத்தாலும், காரம் குறைவதில்லையே. இளையோன் என்பதும், உறவினன் என்பது, சபையிலோ, ஒரு நிருவாகத்திலோ உதவாதவை.
Transliteration:
ILaiyar inamuRaiyar enRigazhAr ninRa
oLiyODu ozhugap paDum
ILaiyar – he is younger to me;
Ina muRaiyar – he related to me or is my friend;
enRigazhAr – thinking so, do not treat the ruler as inferior or equal.
ninRa – the respect which is entitled for
oLiyODu – considering his exalted position
ozhugappaDum – giving that, one must interact with the ruler.
Never think of the ruler as inferior or equal because they are younger in age or they are related or a friend; those who interact with a ruler always shall give the respect for his exalted position and its glory, says this verse.
Never underestimate a person based on their age; Even if the mustard seed is small in size, its spiciness if known by its piquant taste on tongue. Similarly however close a person is the hierarchy has to be respected in an organization. To talk to a person of authority based on the closeness in private setting is inappropriate.
