நன்றென்ற வற்றுள்ளும் நன்றே முதுவருள்
முந்து கிளவாச் செறிவு.
(குறள் 715: அவையறிதல் அதிகாரம்)
நன்று – நல்லவை
என்றவற்றுள்ளும் – என்று அறியப்பட்ட எல்லாப் பண்புகளிலும்
நன்றே – இதுவே முதன்மையான நல்லது! (எது?)
முதுவருள் – அறிவில் முதிர்ந்தோர் நிறைந்த அவையில்
முந்து – தாம் முந்திக்கொண்டு, முற்பட்டு
கிளவாச் – பேசாத
செறிவு – ஒழுக்கு, அடக்கம்.
நல்லவை என்று அறியப்படும் எல்லாப் பண்புகளிலும், மிக்க நல்லதாய் அறியப்படுவது, முதிர்ந்த அறிவாளிகள் நிறைந்த அவையில் தாம் முந்திக்கொண்டு ஏதுவும் பேசாத ஒழுக்கு, பண்பு, அடக்கம்! பரவலாகக் நாம் காணுகின்ற இப்பண்பற்ற செயல் வள்ளுவன் காலத்திலும் இருந்திருக்கவேண்டும். அன்றும், இன்றும், என்றும், அவையொழுக்கிலே அறியப்படவேண்டிய இன்றியமையாத பண்பு இது.
முதிர்ந்த அறிவாளிகள் என்போர் தவம், குலம், கல்வி, கேள்வி, முன்பெற்ற பயிற்சி போன்றவற்றைக் கொண்டோர்.
Transliteration:
nanRenRa vaRRuLLum nanRe muduvaruL
mundu kiLavAch cherivu
nanR(u) – good attributes, virtues
enRavaRRuLLum – among all them
nanRe – the best is
muduvaruL – in the assembly of elderly men of wisdom, experience
mundu – jumping forward
kiLavAch – not saying anything
cherivu – such demeanor, or deportment
Among all the good attributes, virtues known, the best is not speaking before the assembly of men of wisdom with experience, jumping forward to say anything, without being asked to speak. It is the that discipline, deportment which considered the best. The indiscipline hinted in this verse must have been prevalent even during vaLLuvars time to warrant his verse.
