கற்றறிந்தார் கல்வி விளங்கும் கசடறச்
சொல்தெரிதல் வல்லார் அகத்து.
(குறள் 717: அவையறிதல் அதிகாரம்)
கற்றறிந்தார் – கற்கவேண்டியவற்றை கற்று தேர்ந்தாரின்
கல்வி விளங்கும் – கல்விச் சிறப்பு (ஒருவரின் பேச்சினால்) துலங்கும், சுடர் விட்டு ஒளிரும்
கசடறச் – குற்றங்கள் நீங்கிய
சொல்தெரிதல் – சொற்களை மட்டுமே அறிந்து
வல்லார் – அவற்றின் வலிமையைத் தனக்குத் துணையாய் கொண்டவர்களின்
அகத்து – இடத்தில், அவையில்
குற்றம் நீங்கிய சொற்களை மட்டுமே அறிந்து அவற்றின் வலிமையும் அறிந்தோர் நிறைந்த அவையில், கற்க வேண்டியவற்றை முறையாகக் கற்று தேர்ந்தவரது கல்வியானது (அவர் பேச்சிலே) துலங்கும், ஒளிரும் என்பது இக் குறள்வழி நமக்கு வள்ளுவர் சொல்லுவது. எவற்றை எங்கு பேசக்கூடாது என்பதைச் சொல்லி, மற்றும் கல்வியின் சிறப்பு எங்கே துலங்கும் என்பதையும் வள்ளுவர் கூறுகிறார் இக்குறளில்.
ஔவையாரின் மூதுரைப் பாடலை மீண்டும் நினைவு கூறுவோம். இப்பாடல் கற்றோரையும், கல்லாதவரையும் யார் விரும்புவர் என்பதைச் சொல்லும் பாடல்.
நற்றா மரைக்கயத்தில் நல்லன்னஞ் சேர்ந்தாற் போல்
கற்றாரைக் கற்றாரே காமுறுவர் – கற்பிலா
மூர்க்கரை மூர்க்கர் முகப்பர் முதுகாட்டிற்
காக்கை உகக்கும் பிணம்
Transliteration:
kaRRaRindhAr kalvi viLangum kasaDaRach
choltheridhal vallAr agathu
kaRRaRindhAr – Scholarly’s
kalvi viLangum – erudtion will shine and be shown in fore (in)
kasaDaRach – blemishless
choltheridhal – knowledge of such words (blemishless)
vallAr – and those that make use of such words as their strength
agathu – in an assembly of such learned
Only in the assembly of wise and scholarly a learned person’s erudition will be acknowledged, appreciated and be allowed to flower. In an indirect way, vaLLuvar cautions the men of knowledge to know the assembly where they speak if it is an assembly worthy of his time and taste. So far he has said, who should not speak, what in which place; in this verse, he says where one will be recognized as learned.
AuvayyAr in her anthology of “mUdhurai”, sums up both in one poem. Only scholarly will appreciate scholarly. Similarly the rude and unlearned will only go with their kind!
Only in the assembly of wise of blemishless wordpower
Will the prowess of scholarly be appreciated and flower”
