பகையகத்துச் சாவார் எளியர் அரியர் 
அவையகத்து அஞ்சா தவர்.

பகையகத்துச் – பகைவரிடத்தில் பொருது
சாவார் – சாவதற்கு
எளியர் – எளிதென்றிருப்பர் பலர்
அரியர் – ஆனால் சிலரே
அவையகத்து – கற்றோர் நிறைந்த அவையினை நோக்கி
அஞ்சாதவர் – பேசுதலுக்கு அஞ்சாதவர்

பகைவர் இருக்கும் இடங்களில் நுழைந்து அவரோடு பொருது மடிந்து போதல் எளிதான செயலாம் பலருக்கும். ஆனால் கற்றோர் நிறைந்த அவையிலே அஞ்சாது தமது கருத்தை இயம்பும் திறமுடையோர் ஒரு சிலரே. அத்தகையோரைக் காணல் அரிதேயாம். வாட்போருக்கு வரிந்து கட்டிக்கொண்டு வருபவர்கூட கற்றமைந்தார் அவையில் வாய்போருக்கு வாய்ப்பு வந்தாலும் விலகிவிடுவதை இக்குறள் கூறுகிறது.

Transliteration:

Pagaiyagaththuch chAvAr eLiyar ariyar
Avaiyagaththu anjA dhavar

Pagaiyagaththuch – Fighthing with enemies
chAvAr – and to die
eLiyar – is easy for many
ariyar – only a few
Avaiyagaththu – in the assembly (of scholarly)
anjAdhavar – are fearless (to speak what is in their mind)

For many, to fight an enemy, entering the their turf and even die for a cause or none is easy. But, to speak in the house of scholarly is really hard and only a very few gifted scholars can face it tough. To see such people is rare. Sword fight is easier than the “word-fight” for many; especially facing an assembly of scholars is indeed difficult for most people, and most would avoid such situations.

“To fight an enemy is easy for many, in their own turf;
Only a few can face the house of erudite real tough”
