பொறையொருங்கு மேல்வருங்கால் தாங்கி இறைவற்கு
இறையொருங்கு நேர்வது நாடு.
(குறள் 733: நாடு அதிகாரம்)
பொறை ஒருங்கு – குன்றுகளெல்லாம் ஒன்றாக (அடுக்கடுக்காக சுமையான நிகழ்வுகள்)
மேல் வருங்கால் – சேர்ந்து மேலே அழுத்தும்போது வரும்போது
தாங்கி – வரும் சுமையனையவற்றை தாங்கி (மாற்று நாட்டார் அகதிகளாக வருவதல் போன்றனைய)
இறைவற்கு – அரசர்க்கு (மக்களாட்சி இருக்கும் நாடுகளில், ஆட்சிக்கு)
இறை ஒருங்கு நேர்வது – வரிகளை முழுவதுமாக குறைவில்லாமல் செலுத்தும்படியான வளமுடைத்ததே
நாடு – ஒரு நாடென்று அறியப்படும்
பாறைகளைக் கொண்ட குன்றுகள் ஒருங்கே சேர்த்து சுமையாக அழுத்துவதையும் போன்ற சுமைகளான அயல் நாட்டிலிருந்து போர், வரட்சி மற்றும் பஞ்சம் போன்றவற்றால் பாதிக்கப்பட்டு, தம் நாட்டுக்கு புலம் பெயர்ந்தவர்களையும், அவர்களால் நாட்டின் வளங்களை பகிர்ந்து கொள்ளவேண்டியது நேரினும், அவற்றையெல்லாமும் தாங்கிக்கொண்டு, தம்முடைய ஆட்சிக்கு சேரவேண்டிய வரிகளைத் தவறாமல் தரக்கூடிய அளவுக்கு வளமிக்க குடிகளைக் கொண்டதே நாடு எனப்படும்.
பொறையென்பது சுமை என்பது இக்குறளில் தருவித்துக்கொண்ட பொருள்தான். அத்தருவித்துக் கொண்ட பொருளையும் நீட்டித்து அச்சுமை இன்னவகையானதென்பது, தருவித்துக்கொண்ட பொருளிலிருந்து மீண்டும் தருவித்துக்கொள்ளப்பட்ட பொருள். இக்குறளை மற்ற உரையாசிரியர்கள் வழி நின்று உரை செய்வதே பொருத்தமாகவும் உள்ளது.
Transliteration:
poRaiyorungu mElvarungAl thAngi iRaivaRku
iRaiyorungu nErvadhu nADu
poRai orungu – Pressing burden due to weights of many hillocks, all together
mEl varungAl – if they come over and crush as a burden
thAngi – bearing all of them (simile to destitute that migrate in to the country)
iRaivaRku – to the ruler, government
iRai orungu nErvadhu – pay all taxes without fail (by being so prosperous)
nADu – is a state that is prosperous
Though like the burden of many hillocks together press the citizens of the country, bearing even such a burden, if the citizens of a country are able to pay their tax dues to their rule or ruler without flinching, such country is a prosperous state. The burden of hillocks is a simile used for the burden of destitute that migrate to a country seeking asylum due to problems of famine, oppression, war etc,. When such a burden is thrown on a country, its resources are depleted considerably. A country that is able to bear such a burden for prolonged periods and still have its citizens pay their taxes without delay is a true state of prosperity.
The word “poRai” is a simile used for the burden of hillocks. That it self is a construed meaning. Extending that simile to the burden due to destitute is a further extension of the earlier simile. It makes sense to do the commentary based on what earlier commentators have done.
