பொருளென்னும் பொய்யா விளக்கம் இருளறுக்கும்
எண்ணிய தேயத்துச் சென்று.
(குறள் 753: பொருள்செயல் வகை அதிகாரம்)
பொருளென்னும் – செல்வமென்னும்
பொய்யா விளக்கம் – அணையாத ஒளியுமிழ்வான் (நந்தா விளக்கு)
இருள் அறுக்கும் – துன்பமென்னும் இருளைத் தீர்த்து நீக்கிவிடும்,
எண்ணிய தேயத்துச் – ஒருவர் நினைத்த உருவத்திலே (பணமோ, உதவியோ, பொருளோ)
சென்று – சென்று.
செல்வம் என்பது அணையா விளக்காய் நின்று துன்பமாகிய இருளை யாவர்க்கும், எவ்வுருவில் சென்றாலும் நீக்கவல்லது, என்பதே இக்குறள் சொல்லும் பொருள். தேயம் என்ற சொல்லுக்கு தேசம் அதாவது நாடு என்றே பெரும்பாலான உரையாசிரியர்கள் உரையாக்கம் செய்கின்றனர். ஆனால், தேகம் அதாவது உருவம் (உடல்) என்ற பொருள் கொள்வதே சரியாக இருக்கும். செல்வம் எவ்வுருவில் சென்றாலும், ஒளியாக இருந்து ஒருவருக்கு உதவும் தன்மையது. எந்நாட்டிற்குச் சென்றாலும் என்பது பொருந்தவில்லை. “கற்றோர்க்கே சென்றவிடமெல்லாம் சிறப்பு, பணத்துக்கு அல்ல”. பலநேரங்களில் பணமாக வந்து சேரும் உதவியைவிட, தேவையான உருவத்திலே அது துன்பத்திலிருப்பவருக்குச் சென்றடைந்தால் அதுவே துன்பத்தைத் துடைக்க வல்லது.
ஆனால் இக்குறள் பொருள் செய்வகையைச் சொல்வதாகத் தெரியவில்லை. பணம் உள்ளவர்களுக்குச் செலவழிக்கும் அற வழிகளைச் சொல்வதாகவே தோன்றுகிறது. அதிகாரம் தப்பி வந்த குறளோ?
Transliteration:
poruLennum poyyA viLakkam iruLarukkum
eNNiya thEyaththus chenRu
poruLennum – the wealth of money
poyyA viLakkam – is like unfailing source of light
iruL arukkum – that can kill the darkness of misery
eNNiya thEyaththuch – in the form that one needs it (money, help, service, objects)
chenRu – when it reaches the needy.
Wealth is the unfailing bright light that can dispel the darkness of misery in whichever form it reaches the needy – is the essence conveyed in this verse.
Most commentators interpret the word “thEyam” as “country” meaning, to whichever country it goes. In a round about way it may be true; but to understand the word as “body” or “form” makes much more sense. In which ever form the money or wealth reaches the needy, either as help, or service, or object-need of the hour or even as money to meet their needs, it lits the lamp of hope and dispels the darkness of misery. Afterlall, only “for erudite wherever they go glory is guaranteed”, not for the rich. Wealth in the form of appropriate form has the ability to remove the misery, is what is conveyed in this verse.
However the verse does not seem to say about the ways of making wealth, as implied by the chapter heading, but ways to spend it usefully for the needy. Perhaps, it is in a wrong chapter!
